  Here's What Happens When This Cover's Missing

  Your gear selector arm goes into your transmission through an opening in the case. The dust cover clips onto the bottom of the gear selector arm and it's what seals that opening. It keeps dirt, water, and road salt from getting into your transmission where your shift linkage lives. When the cover's missing or it's torn, dirt and moisture get in every single time you're driving. That dirt grinds away at your shift linkage bushings and it makes your shifter feel sloppy or notchy.
