The Prayer plant, known as Maranta leuconeura, is a popular choice among houseplant enthusiasts due to its stunning foliage and relatively easy-care needs. Known for its uniquely patterned and colorful leaves, this plant adds a vibrant touch to indoor spaces, making it one of the most sought-after houseplants. Those looking for a pet-friendly plant will be pleased to know that prayer plants are non-toxic to both pets and humans.

The Prayer Plant is so named for its unique habit of folding its leaves upward in the evening, as if in prayer. This remarkable movement is a natural circadian rhythm known as “nyctinasty,” in which the leaves respond to light levels by opening flat during the day and curling up at night. In addition to being closely related to the red prayer plant, this intriguing behavior gives any indoor garden a dynamic and lively feel.

Native to South America, it is also called the “Rabbit Tracks” plant. The Green Maranta Prayer Plant is renowned for its unique patterned leaves, featuring light green backgrounds and dark green blotches along the central vein.

These distinctive spots create a visually appealing contrast and resemble animal tracks. This eye-catching foliage, combined with the plant's low-growing habit, makes it a perfect choice for table displays, shelves, or hanging baskets.

The Maranta leuconeura is a compact plant that typically reaches a mature size of 12 inches tall and 12 inches wide. In its natural environment, it grows as a ground cover, spreading low along the forest floor under the shade of taller trees.

The Prayer plant flowers bloom in the spring with small, delicate, white, or pale lavender flowers on thin stalks. While not as showy as the foliage, these flowers add a delicate charm to the plant’s overall appearance. However, many people grow the Maranta green prayer plant primarily for its decorative foliage, as the blooms are typically short-lived and less prominent.

When and How to Water Your Prayer Plant

Even though your prayer plant can withstand some dry conditions, it still requires regular watering to thrive. These prayer plants are not highly drought tolerant, so do not allow them to completely dry out. It is critical to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water the plant once the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Make sure the pot has a drainage hole to avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Avoid getting water on the leaves to prevent fungal diseases.

According to one theory, the prayer plant movement is intended to maximize water capture. During the day, they lower their leaves to absorb moisture and rain water, while at night, they move inward to retain water and direct any water to the center of the plant.

In the spring and summer, during the growing season, you may need to water your prayer plant more frequently, possibly every 1-2 weeks, depending on the humidity levels in your home. In contrast, in the fall and winter, when the plant is in its dormant phase, you can reduce watering, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

It's crucial to use room temperature water when watering your prayer plant, as cold water can shock the roots. Additionally, consider using distilled or filtered water to prevent the build-up of salts and chemicals from tap water, which can harm the plant over time. By following these watering guidelines and paying attention to your plant's moisture needs, you can help your Maranta leuconeura thrive and display its beautiful, patterned leaves.

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Prayer Plant

When growing indoors the prayer plant prefers bright, indirect light for at least 4-6 hours daily. Place your prayer plant near a window where it can receive filtered bright light or in a room with ample ambient light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it's best to avoid placing them in harsh, direct light.

Additionally, they can tolerate low light conditions, though not extremely low ones. If your indoor space lacks natural light, you can supplement this houseplant with artificial grow lights to provide the necessary light intensity for your plant.

When considering outdoor conditions for your prayer plant, it's essential to replicate its preferred indoor environment.

If you choose to move your Maranta leuconeura outdoors, ensure it is placed in a shaded or partially shaded area. Direct sun light can be too intense for the prayer plant's delicate leaves and may lead to leaf burn.

By providing a sheltered spot with dappled sunlight or indirect light, you can create a suitable outdoor environment for your prayer plant to thrive. Remember to monitor the plant's response to its new outdoor location and adjust as needed to maintain optimal light conditions for healthy growth.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The prayer plant thrives in well-draining, peat-based potting acidic soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. A mix that includes peat moss, perlite, or sand can help maintain the ideal balance of moisture and aeration for your plant's roots. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally, use our specialized potting mix, opens in a new tab that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your houseplant to thrive. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom, which can lead to root rot.

In terms of fertilizing your prayers plant, it's best to use a balanced, water-soluble NPK fertilizer with a ratio of 5-10-5. During the growing season in spring, you can fertilize your Maranta leuconeura once a year to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth. However, reduce fertilization frequency or stop altogether during the plant's dormant period in fall and winter. Over-fertilizing can cause salt build-up in the soil, leading to nutrient imbalances and potential damage to the plant.

Hardiness Zones & More

For indoor growing prayer plants, they prefer average room temperatures ranging from 65-75°F. It's essential to avoid exposing the plant to temperature extremes or drafts, as they can stress the plant and affect its growth. Maintaining a consistent temperature within this range will help your plant flourish indoors.

For outdoor cultivation, the prayer plant is typically suited for USDA zones 11-12, where temperatures remain consistently warm throughout the year. If you live in a region within these zones, you can consider growing your Maranta leuconeura outdoors in a shaded or partially shaded area. Ensure the plant is protected from direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn and maintain optimal growth conditions. By selecting a suitable spot in your garden or patio that mimics the plant's preferred indoor environment, you can provide a conducive outdoor setting for your prayer plant.

When it comes to humidity requirements, the prayer plant thrives in moderate to high humidity levels. Indoor environments can often be dry, especially during the winter months when heating systems are in use. To increase humidity around your Maranta leuconeura, you can place a humidifier nearby, use a pebble tray filled with water, or group plants together to create a microclimate with higher humidity. Regularly misting the plant's leaves can also help increase humidity levels and prevent them from drying out.

Wildlife – Prayer Plant Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The prayer plant, Maranta leuconeura, attracts pollinators and insects through its unique and vibrant flowers. The plant produces small, white flowers with delicate purple spots that are visually appealing to pollinators like bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. These insects are drawn to the flowers' nectar and play a crucial role in pollinating the plant, facilitating the production of seeds for future growth. Additionally, the plant's foliage, with its striking patterns and colors, can also attract other beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings, which help control pest populations in the surrounding environment.

Toxicity: According to the ASPCA, Maranta leuconeura is non-toxic to cats and dogs, and humans. This makes it a pet-friendly option for homes with pets, as it doesn’t pose a risk of toxicity if accidentally ingested by cats, dogs, or other pets. This feature, along with its beautiful foliage, makes the Prayer Plant a popular choice for pet owners who want to add greenery to their homes without worrying about harmful effects on their animals.

How to Propagate a Prayer Plant

To propagate the prayer plant, you can use division or stem cuttings. Division involves separating the plant at the roots into smaller sections, each with a healthy root system and growth points. When taking stem cuttings, select a healthy stem with several leaves and nodes, then place it in water or a moist potting mix to encourage root development. Ensure the cuttings have adequate humidity and warmth to support root growth. With proper care and attention, you can successfully propagate your prayer plant to expand your collection or share it with fellow plant enthusiasts.

Key Takeaways

  1. The prayer plant, known for its striking foliage and unique leaf movements, is a popular indoor plant due to its vibrant colors and slow growth rate.
  2. According to the ASPCA, it is safe for homes with cats and dogs, as it is non-toxic.
  3. Its leaves fold up at night as if in prayer, a fascinating response to light levels.
  4. Though it does not prefer prolonged drought-tolerance, it can withstand short dry periods and prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil.

This plant not only adds a touch of elegance to indoor spaces but also attracts pollinators with its charming flowers. To care for your prayer plant, ensure it receives indirect light, consistent moisture, and high humidity levels. Avoid direct sunlight and overwatering to prevent root rot. This has become my go to daily sunscreen
Size: 1.7 Ounce (Pack of 1)
After first purchasing a year ago, this has become my daily go-to facial sunscreen while others just sit taking up space in my medicine cabinet. I have sensitive skin and severe reactions to chemical sunscreen and have been searching for the perfect mineral sunscreen for several years after starting tretinoin made my reaction to chemical sunscreen intolerable. I only recently figured out I am also highly sensitive to chemical boosters found in a lot of mineral sunscreens. Especially Butyloctyl salicylate. That one is a no-go for me and until I learned about chemical boosters found in a lot of "100 % mineral" sunscreens, could not figure out why some of my sunscreens made my face flush red and feel like it was on fire when I was in the sun. Lab Muffin is my hero. My skin is dry, mature, and sensitive with some lines/wrinkes, large pores, and rosacea. At first I thought this Sun Bum tinted mineral would be too drying as it has a very light texture vs being creamy. But it is not and the texture makes for a light but effective formula. PROS: - Mineral formula with no chemical boosters. - Does not settle in pores and wrinkles. After applying it settles slightly in lines, but a quick blend with a blending brush and it is good for the day. - Blends easily into hairline and brows. - Does not sting my eyes when I sweat and seems relatively sweat proof. -Does not transfer tint to clothes once it dries down. Even when I wipe away sweat.... nothing seems to come off. It is the only tinted mineral I have tried with little to no tint transfer. - Blends easily with a very soft silky texture that allows you to blend without any tugging on the skin like a lot of mineral formulas. - Matte finish but with a subtle glow. - Tint provides light coverage to even out skin, though does not cover everything. As someone who rarely wears makeup I appreciate the subtle coverage which does not look overdone but helps my skin look better. - Does not emphasize occasional tretinoin dry patches. Some of my other sunscreens (even tinted) seem to make dry patches look worse. This formula covers them without emphasizing (or irritating) them. - Does not feel heavy on my skin. I can't stand feeling sunscreen on my face (or anything which is the main reason I do not wear much makeup) and this formula is so light once it is on I forget it is there. -Light coverage lasts all day if I don't sweat. Needs some reapplication when sweating. -Does seem to provide SPF 30 coverage. With reports about sunscreens underperforming lately, this one does appear to work. I can burn in less than 15-20 minutes in full sun, but no problems with this sunscreen when reapplied after sweating or long sun exposure (I work outdoors as a field biologist, so this one is huge. While I usually wear a hat, it does not cover everything as I cannot use a wide brim hat for my work.) CONS: - The tube. It is not awful, but I always seem to get a build up of product in the cap no matter what I do. This seems like a waste of product, but is really a minor complaint. - It does separate, but states clearly to shake before use. It seems to mix easily, so this is not really a con, just a warning to give it a good shake. - Would love an option for an SPF 50, but again, minor complaint. Overall, this is by far the best mineral facial sunscreen I have found so far for my particular skin and is used daily. The only reason I ever use anything else is to try to use them up. Other brands I have tried include: Undefined R&R sun serum SPF 50 ( a little too "glowy", emphasizes pores, and has niacinimide which I have to use with caution), Naked Sundays Collagen Glow mineral sunscreen SPF 50 (heavier and feel it on skin, but is my go-to when I must have SPF 50), CoTZ Flawless Complexion SPF 50 (feels heavy and not waterproof. Also even though I can'y find any chemical boosters in ingredients, something in this one makes my skin feel like it is on fire when in the sun), Cocokind daily SPF 32 (ok for a non tinted formula as not much whitecast, but does feel heavier than I would like), Murad City Skin Age Defense SPF 50 ( just too expensive), Koh Gen Do Watery Spa UV SPF 50 (my go-to non tinted formula these days though I still feel it on my skin and not waterproof and think it has been reformulated recently), Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 (too thick and heavy), Hero Force Shield SPF 30 (was my favorite next to the Sun Bum until I realized the reaction in the sun was from the chemical booster Butyloctyl salicylate 😩), Agency SilkScreen SPF 50 (was ok, a bit too greasy and not much coverage, but went to back of pack as it has chemical boosters), Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Pure Mineral SPF 50 (I loved this formula and purchased several times before finally learning the reaction in the sun was from chemical boosters), Cetaphil Sunscreen Face Drops SPF 50 (quit using due to flaming face in sun as this one also has chemical boosters), and Etude Sunprise SPF 50 (only used ocassionally due to fragrance, but liked this formula until I clued into chemical boosters).

Love love love!
Size: 1.7 Ounce (Pack of 1), Size: 1.7 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I’m a big hyram fan and after I found out dear clairs and other Korean chemical sunscreen might not be as effective as claimed, I bought this product off of his recommendation. I was a little nervous about a few things. For one I have the worlds Oiliest skin. I felt like dear klairs (my old sunscreen) did leave a bit of shine but it had controlled my oil better than any other sunscreen I tried... until now. This is the closest my skin has ever looked to “normal” as far as oiliness goes so props to that! I also was hesitant on this product because of the tint but also didn’t want a white cast. I would say I’m light to medium with an olive undertone and I think it matches my skin really well! It almost looks like I have makeup on bc my skin tone much more even , but it doesn’t cover breakouts. I happened to have a few pimples (already had them ,not caused by the sunscreen) so you can see that the sunscreen doesn’t cover them completely but blurs/evens out the clear part of my skin. There is a slight white cast but I think the tint offsets it. . I couldn’t speak for other skin tones but I think if you’re light to medium/olive it matches really really well. Finally I love the texture, it’s almost velvety and doesn’t pull on the skin which I hate in a face sunscreen. Not too thick not too watery, and just feels nice to apply. So I don’t really have anything bad to say about this product, but I’ve only had it two days so I’ll have to see if it causes any breakouts ect. But so far I would highly recommend! Update: I have been using this for well over a year now, and I can never go back to anything else! It doesn't cause breakouts even when I've slept with it on by accident. I use it instead of a primer under my foundation, and it works amazing. I literally have no complaints; I have not gotten a sunburn since I started using this. I just reapply every few hours when I'm at the beach/pool. I love reapplying because it controls my oil and gives that blurred bb cream effect, I'm also able to put it under my eyes/on my eyelids without burning my eyes. I was never someone who got compliments on my skin, but that changed when I started using this along with the rest of my skincare routine (Shoutout Hyram!) I'm so glad I found this product! 2024 Update! Still loving and using this sunscreen! I decided to try a couple of different brands earlier this year just because I hadn't ever branched out after finding this product, but this remains the best-tinted sunscreen for oil control and pore blurring I've ever tried!

Great tinted physical sunscreen
Size: 1.7 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This is my new favorite sunscreen. It goes on matte, but is still easy to put on/not pasty. The tint is enough to get rid of the ghost look but not so much that it looks like fake tanner. It's a bit greasier feeling than I'd like but it doesn't look greasy at all so I'll take it.

Stunning
Size: 1.7 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Good lord this is a beautiful mineral sunscreen. And at a reasonable price. It has a mouse-like consistency, is light and airy dries down to a satin-like finish after 15 or so minutes. It has a primer like feel to it which some might not like but this is perfect for those of us with combo/oily skin. I’m fair/light skinned and the color is a perfect match. Gives me a light no-makeup makeup look. Works well under make-up as long as you let it set first. One thing that's a con and has me on the fence about daily use is that because it's so thick and silicone like, you can't put the full 1/4 tsp on your face right away as it's just too much. For the 2 finger application I have to put it on in stages, and let each finger length dry down before adding the next, otherwise it's too much product to do all at once. Takes longer in the morning which isn't ideal but given everything else it has going for it it's still workable for me. I'll see over time if I want to repurchase.
