The Anthurium Red (Anthurium andreanum), also called flamingo flower or fire tongue, is an iconic tropical plant native to the humid forests of South America. Its glossy red spathes — these modified leaves that form its "flower" — bring a note of intense and lasting color to contemporary interiors. Its flowering can last several months and renews regularly throughout the year.

With its long-lasting bloom and persistent graphic foliage, it stands out among the most decorative flowering indoor plants in the catalog and in Verdeia’s Anthurium collection.

Which Anthurium color to choose?

Verdeia offers several Anthuriums with distinct palettes. Here’s how to place the Anthurium Red among the references in the Anthurium collection:

  • Anthurium Red (this plant) — bright glossy red spathes, classic and striking. The choice for a strong colorful presence and spectacular flowering.
  • Anthurium White — pure white glossy spathes, elegant and clean form. The choice for a contemporary and minimalist effect.
  • Anthurium Calon — delicate salmon pink spathes, soft and warm colors. The choice for a more soothing and feminine palette.
  • Anthurium Black Love — deep burgundy almost black spathes, very graphic. The choice for a dark and dramatic contrast in a contemporary interior.
  • Anthurium Sweet Dream — pale pink spathes marbled with white, delicate and original effect. The choice for a softer and nuanced bloom.
  • Anthurium Success Red — intense red spathes on a long stem, more slender form. The choice for a larger size with an even more intense red.

Exposure & location

The Anthurium Red enjoys bright but always indirect light — this is the main condition to maintain regular and intense flowering. Our guide on light and humidity for indoor plants helps you find the optimal location.

  • Light: bright indirect — near an east or north-facing window, protected from direct sun that burns the spathes and fades the foliage.
  • Partial shade: tolerated, but flowering will be less abundant and less frequent.
  • Locations: living room, office, entrance, reception area — anywhere its red flowering can play a strong decorative role.
  • Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, in a slightly humid atmosphere, protected from cold drafts.

The more intense the indirect light, the more abundant and lasting the flowering — an east-facing window with a few hours of gentle morning sun is its ideal exposure to flower almost continuously.

Watering & care

The Anthurium Red prefers a slightly moist but never soggy substrate — as with most tropical flowering plants, overwatering is its main threat. To calibrate watering without overdoing it, see our guide on watering indoor plants.

  • Frequency: about once a week — water when the top of the substrate starts to dry.
  • Water: non-calcareous at room temperature — lime causes brown spots on the spathes and shiny foliage.
  • In winter: slightly space out watering.
  • Humidity: regularly mist the foliage to maintain the tropical atmosphere it needs.
  • Flowering: remove faded spathes at the base of the stem to encourage new flower growth.

A phosphorus-rich fertilizer (bloom fertilizer) diluted once a month in spring and summer stimulates the production of new spathes — check our guide on the life cycle of indoor plants to understand when and how to feed your Anthurium.

Decor ideas & plant pairings

The glossy intense red of the Anthurium Red spathes makes it a natural focal point in any arrangement — it creates a warm color accent that energizes the surrounding green foliage, as suggested by our guide on the indoor plant flowering calendar.

  • For a very graphic tropical floral arrangement, pair the Anthurium Red with a Spathiphyllum and a Calathea Orbifolia — the intense red of the spathes contrasts with the pure white of the Spathiphyllum and the silver stripes of the Calathea for a sophisticated three-color accent composition.
  • On an entry console or desk, place Anthurium Red in a matte black or gold ceramic decorative pot — black intensifies the red of the spathes while gold matches the glossy shine of the foliage for a very elegant look.
  • For a tropical combination with contrasting foliage, combine it with a Monstera deliciosa — the large cut leaves of the Monstera serve as a graphic green background that highlights the intense and glossy color of the Anthurium spathes.
  • In a monochrome duo within the same range, pair Anthurium Red with Anthurium Black Love — bright red and almost black burgundy create a dramatic and very contemporary complementary palette, ideal for a reception area or a minimalist living room.

Verdeia tips

  • Remove faded spathes as soon as they turn green and wilt: cutting the flower stem at the base releases the plant's energy to produce new spathes — this is the most effective action to maintain almost continuous flowering all year round.
  • Water with filtered water at room temperature: Anthurium is sensitive to lime which leaves white deposits on the glossy spathes and shiny foliage — filtered or rainwater preserves the brightness of the flowering in the long term.
  • Repot every 2 years in spring in a draining substrate: Anthurium Red roots gradually and flowers better when its roots are slightly cramped — use a mix of orchids and universal potting soil for optimal drainage. Our guide on repotting guides you step by step.

Beware: NOT the complete treatise.
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
The translation is fairly good and then ... you come to note on pg 70 that says basically, "Oh, did we tell you that we skip all of Questions 101 through 104 and large parts of 100 and 105?" Nope. So you do NOT get the entire "Treatise on Law" -- and they hide that fact. (I have seen other translations, but never have I seen one that excludes any of the questions. Now I'm stuck with an incomplete version. Thanks. One last thing: the paper quality is poor. Just about any pen you use for annotations will bleed through. The paper is CHEAP.
