Cestrum nocturnum, commonly known as Night Blooming Jasmine, is a fast growing evergreen shrub native to the West Indies that typically reaches 10 to 12 feet in height with a sprawling, multi stemmed habit. Its glossy, lance-shaped leaves are dark green and arranged alternately along the stems, creating a dense, lush appearance. The plant is most famous for its highly fragrant, slender tubular flowers, which are creamy white to pale green and bloom primarily at night from spring through fall, attracting moths and other nocturnal pollinators. These flowers are followed by small, berry-like fruits that ripen to dark purple. Cestrum nocturnum thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well drained soil, though it can tolerate periods of drought once established. Its combination of vigorous growth, lush foliage, and intoxicating nocturnal fragrance makes it a popular choice for subtropical gardens, patios, and hedges. Zones 8-11
Germination
Cestrum nocturnum follows a specific process for successful seed germination. To enhance germination, it's beneficial to scarify the seeds by gently rubbing them with sandpaper or nicking the seed coat with a knife. After scarification, soak the seeds in room temperature water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and promote germination. Prepare a well-draining seed starting mix and sow the seeds at a depth of about 1/4 inch in individual containers or seed trays. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, as excessive moisture can lead to rot. Place the containers in a warm location with temperatures around 70-80°F (21-27°C) to encourage germination, which typically occurs within 2-8 weeks. Once the seedlings emerge, provide them with bright, indirect light and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before transplanting them into their permanent location. With careful attention to these steps, successful germination and healthy growth of Cestrum nocturnum seeds can be achieved.
