Illuminate your indoor space with the exquisite, year-round colour of Aglaonema 'Etta Rose', a stunning cultivar of the popular Chinese Evergreen. This highly decorative foliage plant is celebrated for its broad, elongated leaves splashed with vibrant, rosy-pink and deep reddish-hues that dramatically contrast with the dark green margins and mottling. Forming a compact, bushy mound, 'Etta Rose' is a brilliant choice for adding a durable and dramatic pop of colour to any room. Renowned for its resilience and ability to thrive in less-than-ideal lighting, this is a perfect statement plant for beginners and experienced growers alike.

Plant Placement Area:

  • Adaptable Light: Thrives in medium to bright, indirect light, but is also highly tolerant of lower light conditions (though the pink colour may be less intense). Place near an east or west-facing window, or set back from a south window.

  • Warm and stable: Prefers consistent average room temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F). Avoid cold drafts or placement near heating/cooling vents.

  • Versatile use: Excellent for desks, tabletops, offices, or as a floor plant as it matures, adding vibrant colour to darker corners.

  • Indoor only: Strictly an indoor houseplant in most climates.

Benefits:

  • Vibrant year-round colour: The dramatic pink and red variegation provides a spectacular colour display throughout the year.

  • Exceptional durability: One of the toughest and most forgiving tropical houseplants, thriving even with occasional neglect.

  • Air purifier: Known to help filter common household toxins from the air.

  • Low light tolerance: Unlike many colourful plants, it maintains decent colour even when light conditions are suboptimal.

  • Compact and bushy habit: Grows into an attractive, dense clump that works well as a decorative feature.

Watering Tips:

  • Allow partial drying: Water thoroughly when the top two inches of the soil feel dry to the touch. It prefers to be kept consistently moist during the growing season but is intolerant of soggy, waterlogged soil, which leads to root rot.

  • Reduce watering in winter: During the cooler months, significantly decrease watering frequency.

  • Ensure drainage: Always use a pot with drainage holes and discard any excess water from the saucer.

Care Tips:

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix, such as a mix designed for tropical foliage plants.

  • Fertilize sparingly: Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the spring and summer growing season. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter.

  • Humidity (optional): It tolerates average household humidity but will appreciate occasional misting or being placed on a pebble tray during dry winter months.

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the large leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks to remove dust.

  • Pruning: Only remove any old, yellowing, or damaged leaves at their base.

Light Level:

  • Medium to Bright Indirect Light: Optimal for vibrant pink colouration and robust growth.

  • Tolerates Low Light: Survives and maintains some colour in lower light, making it highly versatile.

  • Avoid Direct Sun: Intense direct sunlight will quickly scorch and permanently damage the vibrant leaves.

Toxicity:

  • Toxic to pets and humans: Contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause oral irritation, pain, swelling of the mouth, tongue, and throat, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if ingested by humans, cats, or dogs. Keep out of reach of all pets and children.

Why write another review? There are already so many for this book.
Format: Kindle
It shouldn't surprise me that books that I like, by authors that I love, are extremely popular and well reviewed. This is the case with " . We might just as well ask, "Why write another book on prayer? The world is full of them." I could forego the review entirely, but I just can't do that because I love Annie (the author) so much and I cannot pass up the opportunity to say how much I appreciate her life and her work. While this isn't my favorite "Anne Lamott" book, it is certainly worth reading, if for no other reason than the entertainment value. Her words are so skillfully crafted and lyrical that it causes joy to spring up in my soul. This book will provide some insight into prayer for everyone; from the practiced, long-time prayer practitioner to the novice; from believer to agnostic. You will discover aspects of prayer that you had not appreciated before. This is not a technical treatise on prayer, but it did encourage me to pray and to be more faithful in prayer... to be more "in the moment" and to recognize the beauty that is everywhere around us. The day this came out I bought two copies, one for Kindle (which was formatted well and flowed smoothly) and the audio version (which I will listen to the next time through). I have several of Anne's other books in the audio version and I can say it is a real treat when she reads the books herself. Do not hesitate to buy this (or any other) book by Anne Lamott. You will be happily rewarded in the reading.

Understand your loss. Celebrate your gain. Live!
Format: Kindle
A quick look at what makes us human; our principal line of relationship to the Cosmos. Maybe not always reverent, but always livable and believable. This is a book, a primer, on how to deal with the mess of life. Written with enough seriousness and tongue-in-cheek humor to be readable and thought provoking.

An Invitation into the Heart of Reality
Format: Kindle
I love reading Anne Lamott. She helps me feel that it’s okay to be human. She helps me see that prayer is human. It’s the most natural thing you can do. And, really, everybody does it, whether they know it or not. In this delightful book, Ms. Lamott reflects on what she calls three essential prayers: help, thanks, and wow! Such human expressions! She invites us, the readers, into her perspective on life, infused as it is with both the mundane and the mysterious. There are times when it is even threatening. But we are not alone. We have each other, and we have God. (Or, better, God has us.). I don’t know that Ms. Lamott would want to be called an optimist, but she certainly sees the good in the bad (or, maybe after the bad). Life is both, she seems to say, but all is okay. So we ask for help when we’re wise enough (or desperate enough) to do so—both for ourselves and others. And we say thanks because life is full of reasons to be grateful. And there is so much beauty around us—and tragedy too—that we cannot help but erupt with wow! I urge you to read this book. Perhaps, as you read it, you will feel as I did reading it, that you are in a conversation with someone very wise and very compassionate and very real.

Another Thanks and Wow by Anne Lamott!
Format: Hardcover
I was first introduced to Anne Lamott's writing about 25 years ago when I read her book, Bird by Bird. It was a book about how to write and from that moment she became one of my favorite authors. Help, Thanks, Wow is a wonderful book that I have underlined and reread over and over again. Her writing has a voice that many of us can relate to. It's honest and you can feel her pain. She writes with humor to balance the good with the bad. Something that is so important to learn as we go through life. Her descriptions help you see, feel, and smell when she describes "autumn...the colors are broccoli and flame and fox fur. The tang is apples. The rot smells faintly of grapes..." She tells us how to ask for help when you can't do it all by yourself, but how important it is to say thank you, thank you, thank you and Wow for all the things you are grateful for. I loved when she wrote about how service to others is joy ,but how important it is to be kind to yourself. One of my favorite passages was this one, "This morning at six when I awoke, loneliness was sitting on my chest like a dental X-ray apron, even though I was buried in hairy dog love. Help, I am sad and lonely, and already it looks like today is going to be too long. I prayed...I did a kindness to myself, as I would have a troubled friend..." Her descriptions are all like this one and easy to relate to. I loved this book and have given it to friends who have then bought it for other friends. It is definitely a WOW!!!!

Not bad, but not my cup of tea
Format: Hardcover
After seeing Anne Lamott on TV, I was impressed with her and checked out this book on Amazon. The reviews were good, so I ordered it. I was a bit disappointed on receiving it, as I didn't like the shape of the book (too small) and I didn't like the type style (too hard to read). Then, I struggled to get into the book. I like to highlight insights in inspirational books, and I simply didn't find anything to highlight in this one. I think Anne Lamott is a lovely person and I understand how a lot of people liked this book. However, it just didn't bring any new insights to the table for me and it wasn't written in a way that I found compelling. The good news is, it wasn't too hard to finish, since it is short. I passed it on to someone I hope will enjoy it.
