Syngonium podophyllum, commonly known as the Arrowhead Plant, is a popular and versatile vining plant with distinctive arrow-shaped leaves that transition in color and shape as the plant matures. Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, it is an excellent choice for bioactive setups, where its fast growth and attractive foliage can enhance the visual appeal of vivariums or terrariums.

Care Instructions

LIGHT. Prefers bright, indirect light, but it can tolerate low light conditions. However, the plant will produce more vibrant and lush growth when provided with bright, filtered light. In lower light, the leaves may become smaller and the plant may grow slower. In bioactive environments, position your Arrowhead Plant near a light source, but avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves.

SOIL. Requires a well-draining, loose soil mix that retains moisture but allows excess water to escape. A mix of coconut coir, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal, mimicking its natural tropical habitat and providing good aeration for the roots. In bioactive setups, this type of soil will support the plant while creating a hospitable environment for decomposers like isopods and springtails.

WATERING. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water the plant when the top inch of soil begins to dry out. Arrowhead Plants are susceptible to root rot if the soil remains waterlogged for too long. In bioactive setups, the decomposers like springtails and isopods will help keep the moisture levels balanced and break down any excess organic material, so over-watering is less of a concern, but be mindful to avoid stagnant water.

HUMIDITY. Thrives in high humidity (60% and above), making it perfect for bioactive environments. The naturally humid conditions in vivariums or terrariums are ideal for the Arrowhead Plant, and maintaining consistent humidity will promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Regular misting or the use of a shallow water dish can help maintain humidity levels.

TEMPERATURE. Prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It can tolerate slightly cooler conditions but should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as cold drafts can cause damage. In bioactive setups, maintain a stable, warm environment for optimal growth.

FERTILIZATION. During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. In fall and winter, reduce feeding as the plant's growth slows down. In bioactive environments, the presence of decomposers like isopods and springtails helps create a nutrient-rich substrate, potentially reducing the need for frequent fertilization.

Cohabitation with Bioactive Organisms

ISOPODS. Isopods are excellent companions for Syngonium podophyllum in bioactive setups. They help break down plant debris and organic matter, maintaining a healthy substrate. As the Arrowhead Plant sheds leaves, isopods will help decompose the fallen foliage, keeping the soil clean and nutrient-rich without compaction.

SPRINGTAILS. Springtails thrive in the humid, moist environment that the Arrowhead Plant prefers. They feed on mold, fungi, and decaying organic matter, helping to prevent fungal growth on the plant and ensuring that the substrate stays healthy. Their presence keeps the roots free from mold and other potential issues.

Soil and Maintenance Tips

SUBSTRATE. A loose, well-draining mix is essential. Coconut coir, perlite, and orchid bark provide the necessary aeration and moisture retention for the plant's roots, ensuring healthy growth. A thin layer of activated charcoal can be added at the bottom of the tank to help with filtration and odor control.

HUMIDITY CONTROL. Maintaining the appropriate humidity level is key to success with Syngonium podophyllum. In bioactive environments, use a shallow water dish or mist the tank regularly to keep the humidity levels above 60%. The combination of the plant's natural preference for moisture and the work of decomposers ensures the substrate stays healthy and balanced.

TRIMMING. The Arrowhead Plant can grow quickly, and regular pruning will help control its size and shape. Cutting back the stems will encourage bushier growth and prevent it from becoming too leggy. The cuttings can be propagated in water or soil, allowing you to expand your collection or share with friends.

PEST CONTROL. Syngonium podophyllum is relatively pest-resistant, but in bioactive setups, springtails and isopods can help control any small pests like aphids, mealybugs, or scale insects by feeding on their larvae and eggs. If pests do appear, inspect the plant regularly and manually remove any visible issues.

With its unique arrow-shaped leaves and adaptable nature, Syngonium podophyllum ‘Arrowhead Plant’ is a fantastic choice for bioactive setups. It thrives in humid conditions and works well with decomposers like springtails and isopods, creating a balanced, sustainable environment for both the plant and the ecosystem. By providing the proper care with adequate light, humidity, and soil, this plant will flourish and add a lush, tropical touch to your vivarium or terrarium.

Good contruction but needs a couple revisions

Searching for an interactive toy to feed my beagle his meals from, I first tried the . It split open too easily in rough play and only had the capacity to hold half of a meal. Next I tried for it's larger capacity but it broke at the lid (to Premier's credit they replaced it but I feared it would simply break again). Now on to the Bob-A-Lot. This is a heavy, well made product. I was surprised by the weight. My dog can pick it up but can't carry it for very long. I feel it's not going to break like the others did. That said, the extra weight makes it a noisy toy especially on hard wood floors. The small Bob-A-Lot holds a little over 1 cup of food (large holds 3 cups) but there is a caveat. This is the capacity of the lower chamber. There is actually a separate chamber in the top of the toy that only holds about quarter cup. As a result I have to shake and shake the toy myself to get the food to drop into the lower chamber to load in a complete meal. It's either that or insert food 1 piece of kibble at a time. I wish this toy screwed apart like the IQ Treat Ball or Tug-A-Jug. Despite it's appearance, it does NOT screw apart in the middle. Also slightly annoying is the bottom door doesn't stay fixed into position well. The IQ Treat Ball smartly has several positions for the door to stay locked in. The Bob-A-Lot door is fully adjustable but has often come open more than I want during feeding. As a result the kibble will spill out faster which ruins the challenge. I inquired to Starmark support and they suggested that I use a bit of cardboard or some such to try and jam the door into a specific position. This right here tells me that some additional design could be used. I'd say that the Bob-A-Lot was designed with dogs in mind but not humans. It's a chore to load in the food. And then the door opens too much giving the dog an easy meal. I might even guess that it takes less time for my dog to empty it than it takes for me to fill it. Overall it's the best option I've found but I'm still searching for the perfect combination of all 3 of the toys.

Aggressive chewer approved

Got this to help amuse my 90lb GSD while I was out of town for a month. He gets one meal a day in it, and really enjoys the work. It’s easy, not a puzzle, no frustration, just a “job.” He chewed on the yellow top pretty aggressively while I was gone, and it still works fine. This is a dog that destroys even the most durable chew toys in minutes to hours when he’s anxious, and I imagine he experienced some anxiety while I was gone especially during periods when he was alone. So, I’m quite pleased with the durability. This will definitely stay in the meal service rotation and I will replace it if necessary. One thing to note: the fill hole is pretty small. His kibble is small enough that one might think it would easily pour right in, but no. At some point I’ll get annoyed enough to pull out my drill and make that hole larger.

Lasts Great With a Heavy Chewer
We have had this for two weeks now, and our Pitbull has yet to destroy it. He normally destroys other chews in minutes. Great value, top quality, keeps him well occupied and does not squeak excessively. Seems to have good chewability. Size seems perfect for our 75 lb. Pitty.
