Black Magic Taro (Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic') is a striking aquatic plant known for its dramatic, dark purple to almost black leaves. This tropical plant can add a touch of elegance and mystery to any water garden. While it requires specific care to thrive, its unique appearance makes it a rewarding choice for aquarists and pond enthusiasts.
Planting and Placement
Substrate: Black Magic Taro prefers a rich, loamy substrate. In outdoor ponds or water gardens, plant it in pots with rich soil and submerge them in shallow water, ensuring the top of the pot is just below the water surface.
Light Requirements: This plant thrives in moderate to bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can cause leaf burn, especially in indoor settings. In outdoor ponds, provide some shade during the hottest part of the day.
Water Conditions:
- Temperature: Black Magic Taro prefers warm temperatures between 70°F and 85°F.
- pH: It thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2 to 12 dGH) is ideal for this plant.
Maintenance
Pruning: Regular pruning is essential to maintain the health and appearance of Black Magic Taro. Remove any yellowing or dead leaves to encourage new growth and prevent the spread of disease. Cut back overgrown stems to keep the plant manageable and promote a bushier growth habit.
Fertilization: Black Magic Taro is a heavy feeder. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or aquatic plant tabs to provide essential nutrients. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to nutrient imbalances and algae growth.
Propagation
Black Magic Taro propagates through rhizome division. To propagate, carefully dig up the plant and cut the rhizome into sections, ensuring each section has at least one growth node or bud. Plant the new sections in pots with rich soil and submerge them in shallow water until they establish new growth.
