Sugar Pie Pumpkins are the traditional pumpkin for making pumpkin pies. It is because of their sweet, fine grained, orange flesh which is often more firm and less stringy than their carving cousins.  They are a smaller pumpkin that weighs 1.0-3.1 kg (2-7lbs) each and be 10-25cm (4-10”) around.  They are generally well rounded and tend to stand well on their slightly flattened bottoms. Sugar Pie Pumpkins are bright orange and have a very light ribbing with well secured handles when mature. Vines can spread 1.8-2.4 m (6-8’) long and grow approximately 61-76 cm (24-30”) tall.  Most pumpkins, even the smaller heirloom pumpkins need a lot of room to grow.

Planting Instructions:

  • Start indoors from late April, or direct sow outside in May, when the last chance of frost has passed in your area. Sow the seeds 2 cm (1”) deep, and maintain temperature around 18°C (65°F). The soil temperature should be around 15°C (60°F). Sow 2-3 seeds per hill, or in small pots, and keep the strongest seedling or keep all germinated seeds and plant together in a hill. Germination takes about 7-14 days, depending on the soil temperature.  Transplant the plants into bigger pots when large enough to handle and keep them inside the greenhouse.  Gradually acclimatize the plants before planting outside. Space hills or transplants 1.2 m (4’) between the plants.  If you have more space, you can increase distance from plants. Pumpkin plants prefer sunny locations and very rich soil.
  • Soil Conditions:  Well worked rich, loose well-drained soil. Ideal pH: 6.0-6.8.
  • Planting Depth:  Sow Pumpkin seeds 2 cm (1”) deep.
  • Germination:  7-14 days.
  • Height at Maturity: 45-61 cm (18-24") tall.  Spread: 122 cm (4’).
  • Days to Maturity:   90-110 days for maturity from direct sow.
  • Watering:  2.5 cm (1") of water a week ensures good growth, whether pumpkins  are grown in single or wide rows. The amount of rain that falls during the week affects how much you should water your garden. Spooky pumpkin only requires moderate watering, do not over water.  The trick is to only water pumpkins when they require it. Check the soil moisture levels with a trowel or a hoe and as long as you can see the moisture and your plant looks happy, you do not need to water.  It is important to not get water on any of the leaves.  Use drip irrigation if available, and water in the morning instead of late in the evening.  This simple technique will help prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew.
  • Sun/Shade:  Full Sun
  • Spacing after Thinning:   Thinning is generally not required for 2-3 plants per hill, but you can thin to the strongest plant every 1.2 m (4’) of hill.  Rows should be planted 1.5-2.5 m (5-8’) apart.

Disappointed
Color: S6-muti-color
These were great for about 20 minutes then they stopped squeaking...we have 2 left that I have saved but the other 4 do not squeak anymore...disappointed as my dog loves to squeak things...would not buy these again...My dog is only an 8lb dog too...but he can still play with the balls without the squeak...

Great Value for a ball my dog loves!
Color: S6-muti-color
I wish these ball were in the subscription program! My dog gets sooo excited by the new ball, but her interest in things lasts for a few days. She kills the squeak within 11minutes, but the squeaker stays in place rather than becoming a chocking or swallow hazard, and she still loves to chew it. Next, we must throw the ball approximately 723 times the first day, possibly 496 times on day 2, and just 3- 4 on day 3, at which point she will chase the ball before hollering "it's over here if you need it," while she checks on the chipmunk den. We currently have 17 of these balls in our yard (because we have given several leftovers to a less discriminating doodle next door). These balls hold up really well, get her extremely active for the first couple of days, and are a much cheaper than doggie daycare (after an active morning with a new ball, she is happy to chew on it and sleep much of the day). I always have these on hand!

Pieces chewed off
Color: white & green
My Aussiedoodle loves it. I throw it down the hallway, it bounces crazy, and he chases it. The only complaint is that he can't chew much of the ball part. So now I have to have it put away and brought out for special playtime.

Great squeaky balls! Glow doesn’t last for a long time, but they go far in the Chuck it. Solid ball, my dog doesn’t seem to destroy them.
