The Black Walnut is a long-lived, towering native tree prized for its rich, flavorful nuts, beautiful wood, and deep-rooted heritage in the American landscape. Native to much of the eastern and central U.S., this tree is both productive and stunning, with fern-like leaves, a strong central trunk, and spreading canopy.
Over time, it develops a deep taproot and produces large, hard-shelled nuts cherished by humans and wildlife alike. The wood is among the most valuable hardwoods in North America, used for fine furniture and woodworking.
These trees are all grown from seed foraged from large healthy mother trees in the Southeastern US. Excellent genetics.
Latin Name: Juglans nigra
Size at Maturity: 50–80 ft tall, 30–60 ft wide
USDA Zone: 4–9
Site & Soil: Prefers deep, well-drained soils with full sun; grows best in fertile loam but will tolerate clay and drought once established
Pests & Diseases: Relatively hardy; may encounter walnut caterpillars or anthracnose in humid regions but typically recovers well
🌰 Uses:
Produces delicious, high-protein nuts for food and forage
Supports wildlife—nuts feed squirrels, birds, and other animals
Highly valuable timber—dark, fine-grained wood sought for furniture, cabinetry, and gunstocks
Functions as a shade tree, boundary tree, or legacy planting for future generations
⚠️ Note on Planting:
Black Walnut roots release juglone, a natural chemical that can inhibit the growth of certain other plants nearby. Not all plants are sensitive, but do your research when planting near vegetables or ornamentals.
🛠 Growing Tips:
Plant in a location with plenty of space and good drainage
Allow for deep root development—avoid transplanting once established
Pair with other juglone-tolerant species or give it space in your orchard or forest edge
💡 Fun Fact:
Black Walnut trees can live over 150 years, and their wood is so prized that old stumps are sometimes excavated and sold for veneer!
