About Buying Black Bamboo Seeds

Phyllostachys nigra, commonly known as Black Bamboo and Black Stem Bamboo, is a magnificent species of cold hardy bamboo renowned for its striking dark-colored canes. It belongs to the family Poaceae and is native to China and Taiwan. This fast-growing bamboo variety has captured the attention of gardeners and landscape enthusiasts worldwide. A popular method of propagating this impressive bamboo plant is by germinating and planting fast-growing Phyllostachys nigra bamboo seeds.

Grow Black Bamboo from Seed

Once planted, Phyllostachys nigra seeds quickly germinate and establish vigorous shoots that can grow up to 30 feet in height in optimum conditions, creating a dramatic focal point in any garden or landscape. The distinctively dark cases of Phyllostachys nigra Chinese bamboo seeds offer an enchanting contrast against green foliage, making it a captivating choice for adding elegance and depth to your garden and landscaping. An excellent choice among cold hardy bamboo seeds.

Some characteristic traits of Phyllostachys nigra bamboo plants:

  1. Appearance: Phyllostachys nigra is characterized by its distinctive black culms (stems), which emerge green and turn black after two years. The culms can grow up to 10-15 meters (30-50 feet) tall and 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) in diameter.

  2. Leaves: The leaves of Phyllostachys nigra are narrow and lance-shaped, measuring about 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) long and 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 inches) wide. They are dark green and shiny, with a pointed tip and a slightly serrated edge.

  3. Growth habit: Like all running bamboo species, Phyllostachys nigra is a fast-growing bamboo. It spreads via underground rhizomes and can quickly form dense clumps perfect for privacy screening, natural bamboo plant fencing, or windbreak.

  4. Hardiness: Phyllostachys nigra is a hardy bamboo plant that can grow in a wide range of climates, from tropical to temperate. It can tolerate temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F) and is therefore suitable for cultivation in many parts of the world.

  5. Uses: Phyllostachys nigra seeds are grown and widely cultivated as an ornamental plant for its striking appearance. It can also be used for construction, crafts, and as a food source for pandas and other animals. In traditional Chinese medicine, the leaves and stems of black bamboo are used to treat various ailments, including fever and coughs.

Suitable for Zones 7-10. Classified cold hardy down to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, black bamboo seeds can grow in Zone 6, but might experience some damage with extended freeze. Those in colder growing zones might consider planting in a more protected location with ample winter sun (especially morning sun) and without being overly exposed to prevailing cold winter winds.

Phyllostachys nigra is native to Hunan Province of China, and is widely cultivated elsewhere.

Growing up to 25 m (82 ft) tall by 30 cm (1 ft) broad, it forms clumps of slender arching canes which turn black after two or three seasons. The abundant lance-shaped leaves are 4–13 cm (2–5 in) long.

Characteristics of Phyllostachys Nigra Bamboo Seeds

Phyllostachys Nigra ‘Black Bamboo’ is a beautiful and unique bamboo plant. The  legendary ‘Black Bamboo’ is native to Taiwan and China. Introduced in 1827, black  bamboo became the first hardy oriental bamboo. Phyllostachys nigra bamboo seeds are one of the few types of black bamboo considered cold hardy.

Cold Hardy Phyllostachys Bamboo

Cold-resistant Phyllostachys bamboo is highly adaptable to colder climates and can withstand freezing temperatures. It is known for its resilience and ability to thrive in harsh conditions, making it an excellent choice for gardeners in colder regions. Cold hardy Phyllostachys bamboo typically has a running growth habit, meaning it can spread quickly, making it suitable for creating privacy screens or windbreaks. It features tall, sturdy stalks and dense foliage that can provide valuable habitat and food for wildlife.  Hardy bamboo is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal pruning and care once established. With proper care and attention, cold resistant Phyllostachys bamboo can add beauty, functionality, and biodiversity to any garden landscape.

USDA Hardiness Zones for Bamboo Plants

The USDA Hardiness Zones are a valuable tool for gardeners, providing a guideline for selecting plants that will thrive in specific climates based on temperature extremes. Bamboo, like other plants, has specific temperature requirements for optimal growth and survival, and the USDA Hardiness Zones can help you select the right bamboo for your region.

For example, if you live in a Zone 6 area where winter temperatures can drop to -10°F (-23°C), you would want to choose a bamboo species that is rated for Zone 6 or lower, as these are more likely to survive cold winters. Conversely, if you live in a Zone 9 area where winter temperatures rarely drop below 20°F (-7°C), you would want to choose a bamboo species rated for Zone 9 or higher. Keep in mind that while the USDA Hardiness Zones are a useful starting point, other factors such as soil type, sunlight, and water availability should also be considered when choosing bamboo for your garden.

Appreciating the Beauty of Growing Black Bamboo from Seed

Gardeners appreciate the appearance of black bamboo plants for their striking, dark culms, which provide a dramatic contrast to the typical green foliage found in most gardens. The deep black or dark brown stems of species like Phyllostachys nigra create a unique visual interest and can serve as a focal point or accent in various landscape designs. Black bamboo's elegant and exotic look adds a touch of sophistication and mystery to garden settings, making it a popular choice for modern and Asian-inspired gardens. Additionally, the lush green leaves against the dark culms create a beautiful color contrast, further enhancing the aesthetic appeal of this distinctive bamboo variety.

Soft and comfortable cooling pillowcase that gets the job done!
Color: White, Size: Queen, Color: White, Size: Queen
I got this quilted bamboo pillow protector (queen size) because I wanted a cleaner, cooler layer between my pillow and pillowcase since I’m always hot. This has been a great solution for that. The fabric feels soft and smooth, and it doesn’t make that crinkly noise some cooling pillowcases do. I’m a warm sleeper and the “cooling” aspect feels more like breathable than icy-cold, but it definitely sleeps more comfortably than the thick polyester protectors I’ve used in the past. The light quilting adds a little cushion without making my pillow feel bulky or changing the loft much. I like the fact that if you use a memory foam fill pillow you can add or remove some of the filling to make the pillow as firm or mushy as you want. This is especially helpful for people that are side sleepers vs people that need more neck support. The zipper is a big plus. Just be careful when zipping it open and closed as these are usually the first point of failure for pillowcases in my experience. It closes fully and keeps the protector snug so it doesn’t shift around inside the pillowcase, and it gives me peace of mind for sweat / oils and everyday wear. I’ve washed it and it came out fine with no weird shrinking, and the stitching still looks clean. For the price, it feels like good value if you’re trying to extend the life of a nicer pillow while keeping the sleep surface soft and breathable. It’s one of those small upgrades you don’t think about much once it’s on, which is kind of the point. It just works and helps me sleep more comfortably.

Soft and cooling
Color: White, Size: King, Color: White, Size: King
This pillow cover is great! Well made. Not too thin. Fits my queen pillow like a glove. Came out of the washing machine still looking brand new, with no zipper issues, which can happen with lower quality covers. Zero complaints.

Soft, Cooling Pillowcase That Smooths Out Chunky Filling
Color: White, Size: King, Color: White, Size: King
I accidentally ordered the king size instead of queen, but it still fits my shredded latex foam pillow fairly well and feels comfortable. The pillow has small but chunky latex shreds, and the added foam layer in this pillowcase not only smooths out those chunks but also adds a bit of extra thick comfort, making the pillow feel more uniform. It seems to help with temperature regulation—if anything, it’s subtly cooler or at least not any warmer than my previous pillowcase. I’ve washed it twice so far, and it shows no wear and seems well built, so it should hold up over time and seems totally washable. Overall, it’s a very functional item, and compared with similar products, the value seems reasonable; I’m happy with the purchase and just wish I had ordered the right size.

Good quality cover
Color: White, Size: Queen, Color: White, Size: Queen
First, this pillow cover arrived in a plastic bag (see 4th photo), not a box as the photos online show. Although that does not matter to me, it may matter to other people such as those who intend to give this as a gift. One of the photos I included shows the fabric makeup which is mostly polyester and memory foam with the outer cover having “40% Bamboo Rayon.” It seems like an overstatement to me to market this product as a “quilted bamboo pillow cover” where there’s very little, if any, actual bamboo in it. If you have read up on what “bamboo rayon” actually is, you’ll understand. The material make up aside, the cover is soft and puffier than a cotton pillowcase. Bamboo rayon does have qualities that allow airflow for a cooling type of effect. It washes very nicely. As for the size of the pillar cover, I have tried several pillows inside this case, and the case is at least 2 inches longer than every standard pillow I own (See second photo). Pillowcases with a zipper generally are more fitted in every dimension. This pillow cover fits in all dimensions, except for it is longer than necessary. Not a horrible thing, but worth mentioning. The sewing of this product is good. It has a standard plastic zipper. There’s piping around the entire seam area for touch of class. The gray piping on mine matches the quilting. This is not quilting of the standard sense where threads go through to the other side. It is more of a faux quilting, which you can that on the inside in the photo with the tag. Overall, it seems to be a good product especially for people who sweat when they sleep. Very easy and convenient
Color: White, Size: Queen
Absolutely in love with this pillow case. I have a tendency to let the kids on the bed with snacks and it’s helpful to just be able to take the case off and put it in the washer when it’s dirty
