Euphorbia ritchiei is a compact and sculptural succulent prized for its chunky, ridged stems and unique, spiral growth habit. Native to Kenya, this rare Euphorbia adds striking form and texture to small spaces, making it an ideal choice for shelves, desktops, or windowsills. If you love unusual, architectural plants that are easy to care for, Euphorbia ritchiei is a fantastic addition to your collection.

Unlike many Euphorbias with a spiny appearance, Euphorbia ritchiei has a smoother, more ridged texture and produces small offsets over time, gradually forming a low, spreading clump. This is a true collector’s piece — a beautiful, slow-growing plant that thrives on minimal care and makes a big impact despite its modest size.

Native Habitat and Growth Habit
Euphorbia ritchiei is native to East Africa, particularly Kenya, where it grows in arid, rocky areas. It has adapted to survive in tough environments, storing water in its thick, succulent stems. Indoors, it remains compact and tidy, gradually producing offsets and developing into a cluster of ridged, sculptural columns.

Care Requirements for Euphorbia ritchiei

Water:
Water sparingly. Allow the soil to fully dry out between waterings. Euphorbia ritchiei is drought-tolerant and prefers neglect to overwatering.

Temperature & Humidity:
Thrives in average indoor temperatures between 18–24°C. Low humidity is not a problem.

Soil:
Use a gritty, well-draining cactus or succulent mix. You can also amend houseplant compost with sand or perlite.

Feeding:
Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertiliser or our Organic Tropical Plant Food, which supports gentle, sustained growth.

Light:
Place Euphorbia ritchiei in bright, indirect light or direct sun. A sunny windowsill is ideal. The more light it receives, the more compact and healthy the growth.

Seasonal Leaf Drop – What to Expect:
Euphorbia ritchiei occasionally produces small leaves near the top of its stems, especially in spring and summer. These leaves are temporary and will naturally drop off as the plant matures or when the seasons change — this is completely normal and part of how the plant conserves moisture. It’s not a sign of distress or poor health. In its native environment, the plant sheds its leaves to survive hot, dry spells. Indoors, it does the same — think of the leaves as seasonal visitors rather than permanent features. This adaptation is what makes Euphorbia ritchiei such a tough, resilient choice for low-maintenance plant lovers.

FAQs

Q: How fast does Euphorbia ritchiei grow?
A: Euphorbia ritchiei is a slow grower. Over time, it will produce small offsets and develop into a sculptural clump, but growth is steady and compact.

Q: Is Euphorbia ritchiei pet safe?
A: Like most Euphorbias, Euphorbia ritchiei contains a milky sap that can be irritating if ingested or handled. Keep it out of reach of pets and wash hands after handling.

Q: Can I propagate Euphorbia ritchiei?
A: Yes, propagation is possible through offsets. Allow cuttings to callous before planting in well-draining soil.

Q: My Euphorbia ritchiei dropped all its leaves — is it dying?
A: Not at all! The small leaves that appear seasonally on Euphorbia ritchiei are temporary and will fall off naturally. This is a normal part of its growth cycle and not a sign of poor health. It’s a clever adaptation to dry conditions and nothing to worry about.

Q: Does Euphorbia ritchiei need a lot of light?
A: Yes. Bright light, including direct sun, is key to maintaining compact, healthy growth. A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal.

Good for a laugh at least and a messy kitchen
Color: black
While design, quality, and ease of cleaning are great!! These are not for highly food motivated dogs and puppies. My senior dog (100lbs) took a couple licks, he immediately proceeded to pick it up as one unit and carry it to his bed where immediately tore it apart to get to the good stuff. ~ I will say that it is durable and did not fall apart as he carried it. My 7mo old puppy (60lbs) was intrigued and quickly impatient and was able to flip it over and while this only made a little pumpkiny mess, what he did next was hysterical! He picked it up on the edge and threw up in the air and the mess surprised even him but only for a moment. He promptly did it again and on the third time he was able to break the top loose from the bottom and quickly cleaned up the toy and the mess on my kitchen floor and cupboards. Fair warning for those with energetically food motivated labs!! These have since been donated to local shelter with the same warning.

Great for dogs
Color: blue
My dog is obsessed with this! I put plain yogurt thinned with homemade broth in it and he’s entertained for a good 15 minutes, as well as being fairly calm afterward.

Great bowl, would love this in a larger size
Color: blue
This is a great way to treat your dog! I filled it with a bit of plain yogurt drink diluted with water, and my dog absolutely loved it. It only took him about 3-5 minutes to finish it, but he’s about 60lbs, so maybe a bigger size bowl would be better for him. Max capacity of this one is 190 ml. You do have to monitor your dog with this bowl - mine tried to dismantle the bowl when it was empty, trying to get more out of it. Overall I think it’s a fun way to get your dog to drink a little bit more with diluted yogurt, broth, etc.

My dog loves it!
Color: black
Kudos to whomever created this! I have a super attached (med) dog that follows me from room to room alllll day. The first time I put this down he went right for it and didn’t even notice i had left the deck. He is very food driven. I used bone broth and pumpkin puree, which was a hit but once I used the apple sauce… HUGE hit. My only complaint is that it doesn’t come in an XL size. My dog can empty it in under 3 minutes..so he doesn’t get relaxed or sleepy! it does splash out a bit from the top so I use it on his food mat or outside..my sister can’t stand the noise the ball makes. I wasn’t diluting enough so the ball doesn’t move smoothly in the video, but it really does work! The cover is very well made and sturdy. I didn’t notice it sliding around at all. My dog also did not try to get the ball out (loves to tear apart toys) or tip it over, but I could see that happening. I wouldn’t use unsupervised unless you have a small dog. Please make a larger size!!!!

Works but the bowl is wacky
Color: blue, Color: blue
This slow feeder is actually a very good idea and my dog likes it. I blend plain, unsweetened yogurt with a little powdered pumpkin & apple pectin and thin it down with water so the roller ball can easily rotate. It's sturdy and it doesn't slip on the floor, which is good. However, I give it only three stars because the bowl inside is a ridiculous design. Instead of the inside surface being a gently sloping, smooth surface, the "legs" underneath protrude up through the inside (see photo). It makes stirring and cleanup much more difficult than it needs to be. Presumably, it's made using injection molding so it should be easy to design it with a smooth finish.
