Pearl Weed (Hemianthus micranthemoides) is one of the most versatile and beginner-friendly freshwater aquarium plants, loved for its tiny bright-green leaves and rapid growth. This adaptable stem plant can be trimmed and shaped to function as a carpet plant, a dense midground bush, or even a background filler, making it a favorite among aquascapers of all experience levels.

Often chosen as an alternative to more demanding carpet plants, Pearl Weed aquarium plant thrives in a wide range of conditions, including low-tech tanks without CO₂. Under higher light and CO₂, it grows compact and horizontal, forming a lush green carpet. In lower light, it grows upright with a soft, natural look that brings movement and depth to aquascapes.

At our Splashy Fish tropical fish store, our Pearlweed for sale and other aquarium plants are carefully selected and packed with love! Visit us to buy them online or at our aquarium store in Virginia for a wide selection of freshwater fish for sale, betta fish for sale, freshwater shrimp for sale, and aquarium supplies.

Why Choose Pearl Weed?

  • Small, bright green leaves: Creates a clean and vibrant aquascape look.
  • Fast-growing & easy to propagate: Ideal for beginners and planted tanks.
  • Extremely versatile plant: Can be used as carpet, bush, or background filler.
  • Low to high light tolerant: Adapts well to many aquarium setups.
  • Shrimp & fish safe: Provides shelter and grazing areas.
  • Excellent nutrient absorber: Helps reduce algae by competing for nutrients.

How to Plant Pearl Weed in Your Aquarium

  1. Rinse the plant gently to remove gel or debris before planting.
  2. Separate into small clumps or individual stems.
  3. Plant each clump into the substrate using aquascaping tweezers.
  4. Space plants slightly apart to encourage spreading and bushy growth.
  5. Trim regularly as cut tops can be replanted to thicken coverage.

Tip: To use Pearl Weed as a carpet plant, provide stronger lighting and trim frequently to encourage horizontal growth.

How to Care for Pearl Weed

  • pH: 6.0 – 7.8
  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
  • Lighting: Low to high (20–50 PAR). Stronger light promotes compact growth

  • Fertilization: Benefits from liquid fertilizers and nutrient-rich substrate
  • Placement: Foreground, midground, or background depending on trimming style

Pearl Weed Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Pearl Weed hard to grow?

No, Pearl Weed is not hard to grow. In fact, it’s considered one of the easiest freshwater aquarium plants for both beginners and experienced aquascapers. Pearl Weed aquarium plants adapt well to a wide range of conditions, including low-tech setups without CO₂.

Can Pearl Weed grow floating?

Yes, Pearl Weed can grow floating in aquariums. When left floating, it absorbs nutrients directly from the water column and continues to grow healthy stems and leaves. Floating Pearl Weed provides shade, helps reduce algae, and offers excellent cover for fry and shrimp. However, if you want to use Pearl Weed as a carpet or bushy plant, planting it in substrate and trimming regularly will give better structure and density.

How to fertilize Pearl Weed?

To keep Pearl Weed lush and vibrant, fertilize it 1–2 times per week using a quality liquid aquarium fertilizer containing essential micronutrients. Since Hemianthus micranthemoides feeds mainly from the water column, liquid fertilizers are more effective than root tabs. In high-light or fast-growing setups, consistent fertilization helps prevent yellowing leaves and supports dense, compact growth. CO₂ is optional but can further enhance growth speed and leaf size.

Finally a ball my power chewers cannot destroy
Size: Medium
I have two dogs, an American Bully and an American Pit Bull Terrier, and both of them love to chew. Most balls last a very short time around here before they are shredded or missing big chunks. This one has actually held up. They chase it, tug on it and sit and chew on it, and it is still in one piece with no pieces breaking off. One of my favorite things is being able to put food inside. I add some kibble or small snacks, and they will happily sit and work on it for a long time. It keeps them busy, gives them something safe to chew, and they get a little reward while they play. When they are done, I just rinse it out and it is ready to go again. If you have strong jawed dogs that usually destroy toys, this ball is worth trying. Mine really enjoy it and I feel better knowing they finally have a ball that can keep up with them.

My dog LOVES this ball
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
Does your dog destroy tennis balls in seconds? Yes? Then your dog NEEDS this ball! It's squishy like a tennis ball, fits in ball launchers (even the cheap ones) and bounces when it hits the ground. My dog has been literally playing with this ball all day and not a single mark on it! The only bad thing is that it does not float. Definitely worth the money! Put it in your cart!

Perfect for ball demolishers
Size: Medium
The dogs love the chuck it brand. I don’t know what it’s made of but they go crazy over them. Will not play with another ball. Wonder if it’s “laced” with an addictive scent. Have pits. Very durable. Not able to chew to pieces. Last for about 6 months before there is a small break. I keep a back up because when the ball goes missing the house is in chaos. 😆 🤪

Chuckit medium rebound balls
Size: Medium
My 8 month old German shepherd dog loves these balls. They are easy to throw, they bounce great, they are very chewable! She keeps one in her mouth most of the time. It satisfies her need to chew and she does not chew other things. She drops it in the water and lets the hole fill up and drinks that way. The only problem that has caused is suction in her mouth and difficulty in dislodging it for her. However, she would be lost without it!
