Planting Instructions
Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn between April and June, once soil temperatures have cooled below 15 degrees Celsius. For container planting, select a pot at least 20 cm deep with drainage holes. Fill with a high-quality potting mix enriched with compost or a complete organic fertiliser. Plant each bulb 15 to 20 cm deep with the pointed end facing up. In a standard 20 to 25 cm pot, space bulbs close together, ensuring they do not touch each other or the sides of the pot. Water in thoroughly and place in full sun. In warmer regions, pre-chill bulbs at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 6 to 8 weeks before planting.
Watering and Care
Water bulbs in well at planting time, then monitor soil moisture regularly through the cooler months. For potted Tulips, water when the top 2 cm of potting mix feels dry, but never allow pots to sit in saucers of water. Excellent drainage is critical, as Tulip bulbs are highly susceptible to fungal rot in persistently wet conditions. Avoid overhead watering once shoots emerge. Once flowering is complete and foliage yellows, reduce watering entirely and allow the bulbs to dry out naturally.
Pruning Advice
After blooming, remove spent flower heads promptly to prevent seed formation and direct energy back into the bulb. Do not cut or remove the foliage until it has completely yellowed and died back naturally, as the leaves are essential for photosynthesis and energy storage. Tulips grown in containers are best treated as annuals for the most reliable results each season. The long, straight stems and bold blooms also make excellent cut flowers, lasting 7 to 10 days in a vase when cut at an angle just as the bud begins to show colour.
Climate Zone Guide
Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Outstanding results. Tulips perform at their best in cool to cold climates with cold winters and dry summers. In-ground plantings may naturalise and return year after year.
Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Very good performance with proper timing and planting depth. Choose a full sun position with excellent drainage. Container-grown bulbs should be treated as annuals for the most vibrant display.
Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Pre-chilling is essential. Chill bulbs at 4-7°C for 8-10 weeks before planting in June or July. Treat as annuals.
Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended. Tulips require a prolonged cold dormancy period that cannot be replicated in tropical or arid climates.
Important Warnings
All parts of the Tulip plant, including bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers, are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and horses. Cats are particularly sensitive and even small amounts can cause serious illness. Repeatedly handling bulbs without gloves can cause Tulip fingers, a form of contact dermatitis characterised by dry, cracked, and irritated skin. Always wear gloves when planting and wash hands thoroughly afterwards. Store bulbs out of reach of children and pets. If ingestion is suspected, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
