The leaves occasionally form little clumps, the center of which dies off. Even in enormous clumps, the lateral branches with tiny stem internodes typically do not generate aerial roots and are not anchored to the ground. The pastel green leaves are opposite, about equally sized in cross-section.
More than catastrophic droughts and erratic rainfalls, mesembs are suited to generally consistent rainfall patterns. Even though there is very little rainfall overall, water is nevertheless present annually either through mist or condensation.
