Wisteria frutescens, commonly known as American wisteria, is a deciduous, woody vine native to the southeastern United States. It grows in a more controlled manner compared to its Asian counterparts, typically reaching 15 to 30 feet in length by twining around supports in a clockwise direction. The plant features pinnately compound leaves, each measuring 6 to 12 inches long, composed of 9 to 15 lance-shaped leaflets that turn golden yellow in the fall. In late spring to early summer, it produces cascading clusters of fragrant, pea-like flowers in shades of lavender to bluish-purple, with each raceme measuring 6 to 12 inches long, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Unlike Asian wisteria, Wisteria frutescens blooms on new growth, ensuring more reliable flowering even after pruning. After flowering, it develops slender, smooth, bean-like seed pods that mature by late summer. This species thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils but can adapt to various conditions. It is commonly used as an ornamental climber for trellises, arbors, and fences due to its manageable growth habit and striking floral display. Zones 6-9

Germination

To germinate Wisteria frutescens seeds. Since wisteria seeds have a hard coat that inhibits water absorption, scarification is recommended to improve germination. This can be done by gently nicking the seed coat with a file or soaking the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting. Prepare a well-draining growing medium, such as a mix of peat and perlite or sandy loam soil, and sow the seeds about half an inch deep in individual pots or a seed tray. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged and maintain a warm temperature of around 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Germination can take anywhere from two to six weeks, depending on conditions. Once seedlings have developed two or more sets of true leaves, they can be transplanted into larger pots or directly into the garden. Since wisteria is a vigorous grower, young plants should be supported early to encourage proper twining. Providing full sun and regular watering will help establish strong growth, although the plants can tolerate some shade and drought once mature.

Kids love the newest “Worst” tale-
Format: Hardcover
Kids will love this next book in The Worst series. Awesome, fun, colorful illustrations in this tale with Gilbert the Goblin trying to escape cupids and valentines. Instead of candy for Valentine’s Day give the gift of this book. My students love when Alex Willan has a new book out and are loving this one.

Plenty of fun for Gilbert fans!
Format: Hardcover
As in previous books in the series, Gilbert the Goblin complains about the problems he sees with Valentine's Day, what he calls 'mushy malarkey'. Young readers who don't care for the holiday will find much to relate to in the book. Although, Gilbert's complaints seem a tad trifling. Coconut chocolates are 'Blech'. He seems to have a special issue with the cupid's 'perfect', 'beautiful', and 'luxurious' hair. When Gilbert faces off with a group of cupids, he just barely manages to escape their love arrows, or so he thinks until he backs into a cactus in his own yard and believes he has been pricked by one such love arrow. He then becomes a goblin full of love. He loves his spells, his potions, even himself, but not coconut chocolates. He even welcomes his friends over to celebrate before bidding his pet sock slugs a fond goodnight. Good thing the love spell wears off. This funny book follows the pattern of the previous five books, but the addition of adorable cupids as well as Gilbert's beloved cactuses and pet sock slugs provides plenty of freshness as Gilbert once again (reluctantly) joins in the festivities. Plenty of fun for young fans of the series.
