The Platycerium wallichii is one of the most graceful and rarer staghorn ferns. With its long, gracefully wavy leaves and elegant, regal appearance, this is a species that immediately attracts attention. For lovers of unusual Platyceriums, this is a true showpiece that manages to combine elegance and power.
Origin
This species is native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia, particularly in India and Malaysia. It grows there high in the trees as an epiphyte, where it collects rainwater and organic matter with its broad shield leaves. The species is named after the botanist Nathaniel Wallich, who brought many tropical plants to Europe in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The plant forms two types of leaves:
Shield leaves: large, broad and sturdy, often with a wavy structure. They envelop the base of the plant and collect humus and moisture.
Fertile leaves: long, pendulous leaves that curve gracefully downward, sometimes reaching more than a meter. Their fresh green color and elegant wavy texture give the plant an almost regal appearance.
What P. makes wallichii unique is the combination of its powerful shield leaves with the airy, almost dancing movement of its long fertile leaves.
Care
Light
Plenty of bright, indirect light is desired. Avoid bright midday sun, but provide enough light for strong growth and leaf development.
Temperature
Warm and constant: 18-28 °C during the day, with slight cooling at night.
Substrate
Is usually mounted on wood or cork, with some moss at the base. An open basket with airy substrate will also do, as long as the roots can breathe well.
Humidity
A humidity of 65-85% is ideal, with adequate air circulation.
Nutrition
Lightly fertilize monthly during the growing period, preferably via misting or by giving a little fertilizer in the moss near the base.
Watering
Give only demineralized water. Mist the leaves regularly and moisten the moss around the base, but allow to dry in between to prevent root rot.
Ornamental value
The Platycerium wallichii exudes an elegant, almost regal beauty. With its wavy, drooping leaves, it forms a living work of art that impresses again and again. For collectors of unusual staghorn ferns, this is a species that combines rarity, elegance and grandeur.
