They smoked or chewed the leaves leaves at ceremonial occasions, to induce trance-like states. The roots were also used as a tea. Lion's Tail has been grown in the UK since at least the 18th century.
Semi-evergreen in coastal areas or sheltered urban gardens, but elsewhere it simply needs to be cut right back in Autumn and it will return the next season.

Seed Germination
- Sow indoors in late winter / early spring
- Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost.
- Tamp lightly to get a cood contact with the compost
- Cover very lightly with a sprinkling or sieved compost or sand - light is required for germination
- Cover tray with clear cover but with some airholes
- Keep at around 15-19c in bright indirect light.
- Mist surface occasionally to ensure does not dry out
- Germination is naturally eratic - from a few few weeks to a few months
- Pot on once large enough to handle
- Harden off before planting out
