Expert Planting Instructions for Best Results

  1. Mulch First: Before planting, mulch the area to retain moisture and prevent erosion from water runoff
  2. Cluster Planting: Plant vinca in clusters of 2 pots/plugs per hole (creates 25 planting spots per flat for easier watering)
  3. Create Water Wells: Form a small saucer-shaped well around each planting to direct water to the roots
  4. Double Watering Method: Fill each well with water, let it soak in, then water again immediately
  5. Establishment Care: Water every other day using this method to keep soil moist during establishment
  6. Spacing: Plant 8" apart for quick cover of smaller areas; 12-18" apart for large areas

How Vinca Minor Spreads

Vinca Minor features trailing stems that root at the nodes as they grow along the ground. This natural rooting process allows the plant to quickly spread and form an attractive, dense groundcover. The initial spring growth is the most aggressive, but spreading continues throughout the growing season, especially during cooler weather.

Beautiful Lavender-Blue Flowers

The tubular, lavender-blue flowers are truly exquisite and can be profuse in spring on established plants. Each phlox-like flower measures about 1 inch across and appears in the leaf axils. While the main bloom period is spring (May-June), Vinca Minor continues to flower intermittently throughout summer into fall, especially during cooler weather.

Perfect for Shaded Areas

Vinca Minor 'Bowles' is one of the most popular and widely used groundcovers specifically because it thrives in shade where grass and many other plants fail. It's the perfect solution for those challenging shaded spots under trees, along north-facing walls, or in woodland gardens with indirect sun.

Excellent Erosion Control

The fast-spreading, rooting stems make Vinca Minor highly effective on slopes and banks for stabilizing soils and preventing erosion. Once established, the dense mat of evergreen foliage holds soil in place even during heavy rains.

Good Cover for Spring Bulbs

Plant Vinca Minor as a living mulch around spring bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and crocuses. The vinca foliage beautifully hides the dying bulb leaves after flowering while providing year-round green coverage.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Genus name origin: From Latin meaning "to bind or wind around," referring to the long, flexible stems that were historically used in wreath making.

Species name meaning: "Minor" means smaller - the leaves of Vinca minor are smaller than those of Vinca major.

Maintenance & Care

  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment; drought tolerant once established
  • Fertilizing: Generally not necessary; thrives in average soils
  • Pruning: Trim back in early spring if needed to control spread or rejuvenate
  • Pest/Disease: No serious insect problems; watch for vinca stem canker (blight) which can damage patches

Important Considerations

⚠ Spreading Nature: Vinca Minor can spread aggressively into adjacent lawns or garden areas. Plant where spreading is desired or install barriers to contain.

⚠ Invasive Status: Considered an invasive plant in certain states. Please check local regulations before planting and monitor spread.

Why 'Bowles' Variety?

The 'Bowles' cultivar is prized for its particularly vibrant true blue flowers and vigorous growth habit, making it one of the most popular Vinca minor selections for groundcover use.

There are some issues, but overall, this is a good book!
Format: Paperback
3.5 stars. I have always enjoyed Jennifer Dugan's writing, so I was excited to read "The Ride of Her Life." This is a sapphic fish-out-of-water, angst-ridden romance between two polar opposite protagonists thrust together after tragedy strikes. Molly has just inherited a commercial horse barn from her estranged aunt (her mom's sister). It is the best thing that has happened to her in a while, and while she's sad about her aunt's passing, she sees this inheritance as a huge life change and a way to make her dreams a reality. Shani is the farrier who lives on the compound. She also helped take care of Molly's aunt in the last days of her life. Shani thought *she* was going to inherit the barn from Molly's aunt, especially since she worked there for years and is full of experience when it comes to running the place. The longer Molly stays at the property, the more she connects to the area, the animals, and the people her aunt loved, cared for, employed, and valued. At constant odds with one another, Molly and Shani are essentially rivals and enemies. Shani doesn't want Molly to sell the property, but Molly needs to pay off her student loans and get her business off the ground. Will they eventually see eye to eye? What you will find in this book is a relatively quick, fun read that is offset by its heavier themes. Unlike "Love at First Set," the balance between seriousness and levity didn't quite mesh as well for me. I liked the enemies-to-lovers vibes in this book, that aspect is handled really well! This leads to a lot of pining and tension between Molly and Shani early on, which sets the stage for some epic steaminess in the latter portion of the book. Unfortunately, what you will *also* find here is a *metric ton* of miscommunication, so if you're not into that trope, stay away from this book. I also wish I had known more about Shani. Her exposition and backstory feel very scant compared to Molly's. We know she has a lot of trauma from when she was younger, but that's about it. Nothing is expounded upon too tremendously. Another thing that stood out to me is how it is repeatedly mentioned that Molly has made it a habit of getting lost in her past relationships. Molly falls fast and jumps in head-first. There's no real indication that her dalliance/tryst/potential relationship with Shani is any different just because they shared some deep confessional moments. Molly's still just turning herself into a horse girl to satisfy Shani's career even though she loves everything antithetical to that lifestyle because..... love? S3x? Both? Finally, while I am satisfied with the ending where the two protagonists are concerned, it feels like there is little resolution between Molly and her best friend Nat, and between Molly and her mother. Still, there is a lot to like about this novel!

Anthony Bourdain would not reject this story of a monster so in love with what is better in our human nature. This is indeed a master piece because it is so well crafted and therefore so mooving. A delicious journey through deep feelings, food, love, generosity... and hunger for Life!
