The French lavender is known as Lavandula dentata; the term 'dentata' means "toothed" and refers to the scalloped leaves. It is extremely drought-tolerant and renowned for its use as a popular essential oil, for culinary, cosmetic, and medicinal applications.

It is famous for its iconic purple blooms with a calming scent and ruffled, serrated leaves; which results in its other common names such as Toothed Lavender or Fringed Lavender.

Native to the Mediterranean climates, the Lavandula dentata was once considered a subspecies of Spanish lavender (Lavandula stoechas), but it is now recognized as a distinct species.

Check the plant tag to ensure you're purchasing Lavandula dentata, as Spanish lavender is occasionally mistaken for French lavender.

French Lavender can typically grow up to 3 feet tall and spreads 2 feet. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for borders, containers, or hedges.

The flowers of French Lavenders are its most striking featureIn frost-free, warm climates, they bloom year-round. In areas that receive frost, it blooms from early spring to fall. They appear in mid-summer and are a vibrant purple color with a distinctive "fringed" appearance due to the toothed edges of the petals. Although it is adorned with its famous purple flowers, Lavandula dentata is not as fragrant as English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).

Blooming Tip

Remember, it is critical to dead-head French lavender flowers throughout the summer because they bloom continuously from May to September. When pruning lavenders, make sure there is enough green on the plant so that new blooms can grow. With the spent flowers, you can make a new bouquet or let them air dry and create fragrant satchet bags to store in your dresser to scent your clothes.

How to Water French Lavender

French Lavender is an extremely drought-tolerant plant that thrives in dry conditions, making it perfect for water-conscious gardeners or those who tend to forget to water their plants from time to time. Due to its adaptability to arid environments, it requires minimal watering, and you'll rarely need to water it unless faced with extreme heat and drought.

Make sure the soil drains well to prevent root rot. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot and other problems. When watering Lavandula dentata, provide about 1-2 inches of water per week, either from rain or irrigation. Mulching around the base of the plant with gravel mulch can help retain moisture and reduce evaporation. However, avoid getting water on the leaves or crown to prevent fungal diseases.

When first planted, new Lavender plants appreciate more frequent watering to establish a strong root system. However, once established, they become highly resistant to drought and require less water. In fact, watering every 2-3 weeks is sufficient until blooms appear, indicating the plant's readiness for more frequent hydration.

As French Lavender blooms, increase watering to once a week or every 10-14 days to promote healthy growth and maximize flower production. After you pick or deadhead the flower, you can revert to the initial watering schedule. Remember, overwatering can harm your Lavender plant, so it's essential to strike the right balance and respect its love for dry conditions.

Seasonal Watering Needs

  1. Spring: Water every 2-3 weeks as the plant produces new growth and prepares for blooming.
  2. Summer: Increase watering to once a week or every 10-14 days during hot weather, especially when blooms appear.
  3. Autumn: Reduce watering to once every 4-6 weeks as the plant prepares for dormancy.
  4. Winter: Water sparingly, only once every 2-3 months, as the plant is dormant.

During periods of extreme drought, French Lavender plant may drop its leaves or become dormant to conserve water. Don't worry! With regular watering, it will recover quickly.

Light Requirements: Where to Put French Lavender

When growing French Lavender indoors, it's essential to provide it with plenty of bright light to mimic its natural Mediterranean habitat. Place your Lavender plant in a south-facing window that receives direct sunlight for at least 4-6 hours a day.

If this isn't possible, east- or west-facing windows can also work, but avoid north-facing windows as they receive too little light. Supplement with grow lights if necessary to ensure your plant receives the light it needs.

Remember, your plant French lavender Lavandula dentata prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid placing it in a spot with low light, as this can lead to weak and spindly growth. If you're growing it indoors during the winter months, consider moving it to a brighter location or using grow lights to compensate for the shorter days.

For outdoor cultivation, choose a location that receives full sun to partial shade. French Lavender plants love basking in direct sunlight for 6-8 hours a day, but they can tolerate some shade, especially in warmer climates. If you live in a hot, sunny area, consider providing some afternoon shade to prevent scorching. In cooler, cloudier climates, opt for a sunnier spot to encourage blooming.

French Lavender’s Perfect Mix: Soil & Fertilizer

The French lavender prefers well-drained alkaline soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. Avoid heavy clay or sandy soils, as they can lead to root rot or drought stress. Instead, opt for a mix specifically designed for Mediterranean plants like Lavandula dentata, which typically contains a blend of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. Planet Desert has specialized potting soil, opens in a new tab that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help grow a healthy root system and help your plants thrive.

In terms of fertilizer, it requires minimal or no feeding. This plant thrives on very few nutrients, whereas too many nutrients can harm the plant, resulting in leggy, yellowed foliage and fewer flowers.

If your French lavender plants aren't looking their best, nutrient deficiencies could be the cause. A balanced, water-soluble NPK fertilizer applied at half the recommended strength is sufficient. You can fertilize in the spring when new growth appears.

When choosing a fertilizer for French Lavender, look for one that is high in potassium (K) and low in nitrogen (N). Potassium promotes root growth, flower production, and overall plant health, while excessive nitrogen can lead to weak stems and fewer blooms. A balanced fertilizer with a ratio of 5-10-10 (N-P-K) is suitable for Lavender.

It also benefits from a layer of compost or well-rotted manure around the base, which provides slow-release nutrients and improves soil structure.

Hardiness Zones & More

When growing indoors, it prefers daytime temperatures between 65°F and 75°F and nighttime temperatures around 55°F. Maintain a consistent temperature, avoiding sudden drops or rises. They prefer relatively low humid climates, around 40-50%. You can achieve this by placing the pot on a tray with pebbles and water or using a humidifier.

French Lavender can tolerate some fluctuations in temperature and humidity, but extreme conditions can lead to stress and poor growth. Avoid placing your plant near heating or cooling vents, fireplaces, or drafty windows. If you live in a hot and humid climate, consider using an air conditioner or dehumidifier to maintain a suitable environment for your Lavender.

For outdoor cultivation, it thrives in USDA zones 8-11, meaning it can tolerate temperatures as low as 20°F and as high as 90°F. If you live outside these zones, consider growing French Lavender in containers that can be moved indoors during extreme weather conditions. It prefers full sun and ventilation, making it an excellent choice for gardens with good air circulation. In warmer climates, provide some afternoon shade to prevent scorching. It can tolerate some frost but may need protection during prolonged periods of extreme cold. Though this Lavender plant is typically planted in the spring, it can also be planted in the fall in areas with mild winters.

Wildlife - French Lavender Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

French Lavender is well-known for attracting various pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Its fragrant, purple flower spikes produce a sweet nectar that draws these pollinators, supporting the local ecosystem and aiding in the pollination of nearby plants.

Toxicity: French Lavender is generally considered non-toxic to humans and can be used in culinary and aromatic applications. It is also safe for deer and rabbits. However, it is mildly toxic to pets, such as cats and dogs.

Propagating French Lavender: Tips & tricks

The French Lavender can be propagated through various methods, including stem cuttings, layering, division, and seed. Stem cuttings are the most popular method, where 3–4-inch stem tips are cut, removed from lower leaves, and planted in well-draining soil. Keep the soil moist and warm until roots develop. Layering involves bending a long stem to the ground, securing it with a rock, and waiting for roots to form. Division involves separating established plants in the spring or fall, making sure each section has roots and foliage. Seed propagation is less common, as it can be unpredictable, but sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, and transplant outside when weather permits. Regardless of the method, Lavender propagation requires patience, as it can take several months for new plants to establish themselves.

Good, but a little spendy and lower capacity for value
Color: Black
I have used this plenty at work anytime I forget to charge my Samsung S25 Ultra (which has a 5,000mah battery) or am using it intensely, often for work. The charge time is actually the new Qi 2, so it's not bad. It's not a fast charger, but it's super good enough to not bring a cable. It's slim enough to not care as well. I am a nerd and keep it in my cargo pocket which also helped save the day for some poor lady who needed to charge her iPhone, so I lent that to her for a short bit. It's super unubtrusive to keep on you so it's handy if or when you need it, or need to help. I like Anker as a brand, and lean to them for battery banks. I have several of their batteries, so I figured I will eat the premium to get the portability. I like the form a lot, and the magnetc retention is rock solid. Charge speed is fair, and heat isn't what I would call concerning if this isn't something you do with frquency. A 5,000mah battery will not go far in real world use. One full recharge, which is perfectly suitable. The price is what will hurt. You can get a conventional bank for the same with much more capacity. It won't be as slim and likely won't be wireless (or as fast). I rather like this battery but am hesitant to recommend it. It really is a case of do you want slim and portable or capacity and budget? It is a solid product, however you decide.

Best travel MagSafe Charger
Color: Black
I recently purchased the Anker Nano MagSafe Portable Charger, Ultra-Slim 5,000mAh, and it has quickly become one of my favorite everyday tech accessories. The compact design and reliable charging performance make it incredibly convenient for keeping my iPhone powered throughout the day, whether I’m commuting, traveling, or simply away from an outlet for extended periods. One of the first things I noticed was how slim and lightweight the charger feels. It attaches securely to the back of the phone with MagSafe, making it easy to use while still comfortably fitting in a pocket or small bag. Unlike bulkier power banks, this one maintains a sleek profile that doesn’t add unnecessary weight or thickness. Charging performance has been very reliable overall. The 5,000mAh capacity provides a helpful boost when my battery starts running low, and the magnetic connection stays firmly in place during use. I also appreciate that the charger delivers consistent power without overheating, even during longer charging sessions. The build quality is excellent, which is something I’ve come to expect from Anker products. The materials feel durable and premium, and the minimalist design looks clean and modern. It arrived well-packaged and immediately gave the impression of being a high-quality accessory. Another feature I appreciate is how simple and convenient it is to use. There’s no complicated setup involved—just snap it onto the back of the phone and charging begins automatically. It’s especially useful when traveling or during busy days when carrying cables around can be inconvenient. After using it regularly, I’ve been very satisfied with its reliability and portability. It keeps my phone charged when I need extra power most, and the ultra-slim design makes it easy to carry everywhere without noticing the extra bulk. Overall, the Anker Nano MagSafe Portable Charger, Ultra-Slim 5,000mAh is a dependable and thoughtfully designed portable charger. It offers reliable charging performance, excellent portability, and premium build quality. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a compact and convenient MagSafe-compatible power bank for everyday use.

A really great portable charger
Color: Golden
Works great with my Samsung Galaxy S25 in a magnetic case. I love the small form factor, which means I can keep it on my phone to charge while I'm using the phone when I need to. It also means it's incredibly easy to take any time I leave the house, not just when I travel. It does get pretty warm, but I find that keeping the phone face down helps that a lot. And of course using the phone while it's charging makes it hotter. One note if You're like me and you've never used one of these: there's a small button on the side that activates or deactivates the magnet. I thought the magnet had died because it was no longer attaching to my phone. Then I randomly held the button down and it snapped right back on. It's a useful feature now that I know that it's there, so I don't leave the magnet on when it might be near swipeable cards in my bag. Funny they don't mention anything about that in all the product images, but now I know.

Heat and Charging Complaints Are Unjustified
Color: White
Good product overall. I was going to give it 4 stars because it hangs slightly off the bottom of my iPhone 15 Pro but I realized it says 16/17. Those models might have the MagSafe ring slightly higher on the phone in which case it would fit cleaner. I was worried about Heat after reading the reviews. All inductive charging systems generate waste heat and all charging generates waste heat. It’s nothing extreme here. If it’s in your pocket without air flow around it, it gets quite warm on the phone for sure. In my hand, using the phone for a while plane flight, there’s enough flow that it’s just a bit warm. Battery life is as advertised. It’s somewhere around a charge or so, I didn’t check this scientifically. Plenty to keep you topped up through a cross country air trip. It’s very small and much nicer to have on the phone than some other models I’ve borrowed. Reviews have some complaints that it “doesn’t charge the phone”. That’s a goofy complaint. If the phone is dormant it will add charge percentage. If you’re streaming and emailing, on Bluetooth, and WiFi all at once you’re going to use power about as fast as it can supply without it spiking temperature. I was very happy to just sit at 75% my whole flight while constantly using my phone. It doesn’t matter if it added percentage, you don’t get this to charge your phone, you get this to extend the battery and it does just that. If you can leave your phone out of your pocket where it can breath/cool a bit you’ll be happy with this. Good product and some seem to be expecting it to cheat physics.

Quality 100W capable all-in-one USB-C hub from Anker
Style: 7-in-2 4K@30Hz, Style: 7-in-2 4K@30Hz
I recently added a 16" MacBook Pro to the family and with the extra size/weight wanted to slim down on carrying adapters. I also have a 13" MacBook Pro (2018) and wanted something that would work for both of these without any shortfalls. The Anker delivers and works flawlessly on both of my MacBooks. Charging - It offers full rate charging on either unit and so far - hasn't gotten all that warm in the process. I expected a bake fest and me returning it, so was surprised there. Plugs/Ports - I skipped the Hyper-hub craze as I just never liked the fit into my MacBooks. So this is the first dual-port type device I have used on my Mac's, but it fits very well and doesn't feel like anything needs to be forced to work. Likewise on the receiving side, the card slots are friendly and you won't lose your cards, but it still holds them well. The USB-C ports respond well and have worked with all charger cables and dongles that I have. The USB-A's are classic Anker quality. Thinking about this more...I think I actually like plugging and unplugging things in this. There are some brands (cough: UNI) that I wonder if "this is the time" when it breaks on me or keeps my cable end. So far so good on the Anker. Peripherals and what works - I have only used portables on it a few times so I do not have much testing with NVME there yet, but SSD is just fine and works as normal. Only (1) port of this has Displayport active on it (the charge port). So if you are plugging in two screens to one side of the MacBook - that will need to change. At the same time, if you can convert one of those to HDMI you can connect the HDMI and then Displayport (via USB-C) over the charge port. In addition to fitting the ports well I should also mention - on the 13" MacBook Pro and Air this should lie mostly flush with the work surface you are on and the laptop edge. On the 16" MacBook Pro it does have a little gap under it due to the height of that unit. But it still does not protrude past the top edge and won't bug you if you brush your hand over it. TL;DR: At the time of this review I am about a week in. and have removed all the "docks" from my office and home so I can give this a decent test. At 60$ it is more expensive than other options, but performs very well for my needs. Cons: price I guess. I wouldn't mind a GigE Ethernet port on it at the same price point of 60$, or wait for it on sale if you don't care about the port. Big ANKER on the top of It sort of annoying, if I am picking nits. Pros: Quality interface, known brand, works well on multiple years of MacBook with no weirdness or driver problems. Compatible with latest models and software. Color matches the Apple Space Gray acceptably. I hope you found this review helpful, if not - leave a comment and let me know how we can change that! Thanks for reading my review, Chris
