Dischidia imbricata is a fascinating and unusual epiphytic plant in the Apocynaceae family, native to Southeast Asia. It is closely related to Hoyas and is often grown by collectors for its distinctive growth habit and foliage.

The plant’s creeping stems bear small, rounded, scale-like leaves that press tightly against the surface they grow on – whether bark, wood, or other structures. This overlapping, shingle-like pattern (hence the name imbricata, meaning “overlapping”) creates a unique tiled effect. The leaves are typically olive-green to grey-green, sometimes flushed with purple depending on light levels.

In its natural habitat, Dischidia imbricata clings to tree trunks and branches, forming decorative mats of foliage. It also develops special “domatia” leaves, hollow structures that ants inhabit in a symbiotic relationship – the ants protect the plant and in return supply nutrients.

Dischidia imbricata – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some dappled morning or evening sun but avoid harsh midday rays, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

Watering

Keep the substrate lightly moist, allowing the top to dry slightly between waterings. As an epiphyte, it dislikes sitting in waterlogged soil. Mist regularly to maintain moisture on aerial roots. Reduce watering slightly in winter.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, 18–28°C. Keep above 15°C at all times.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–80%) to thrive. Ideal for terrariums, greenhouse cabinets, or bathrooms with good light.

Soil and Potting

Use a very free-draining, airy mix – such as orchid bark, perlite, sphagnum moss, and coco chips – to mimic its epiphytic environment. Mounting on cork or wood with moss is another excellent option.

Feeding

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertiliser or orchid feed. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim back overly long stems to encourage branching and a fuller mat-like appearance. Cuttings root easily in moss, water, or an airy mix.

Growth and Maturity

A slow to moderate grower, Dischidia imbricata eventually forms creeping mats of shingled leaves across surfaces. Mature plants may produce small, pale flowers, though it is grown mainly for its unique foliage.

Common Issues

  • Leaf shrivelling: Underwatering or very low humidity.

  • Rotting leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Leggy growth: Insufficient light.

  • Pests: May occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids.

Background and Benefits

With its shingle-like leaves and unusual ant-plant relationship, Dischidia imbricata is a true curiosity for plant collectors. Its compact, mat-forming growth makes it ideal for terrariums, mounted displays, or hanging planters where its unusual foliage can be admired up close.

Fine Simple Product, Works as Advertised
Size: 3-Panel
Performs as advertised, a simple upright divider. I use it to mark my "office" space when working from home. Assembly was straightforward and well documented. One person can do it, but a second person can be helpful when sliding the fabric divider pieces onto their poles. Part quality is fine for the price point. The only mild annoyance is that the upright poles can start getting loose from the metal feet, and need to be retightened occasionally (Allen wrench is included, keep it handy for retightening). It's fairly lightweight and easy to reposition, but the feet are heavy enough to keep it steady once placed. All in all, a good product. I was pleased enough to buy a second one when my son wanted something to block sunlight from behind his computer desk.

Wobbly and Poor Design
Size: 1-Panel
Update: nope! Not worth the money. My cat simply brushed against the divider, and it fell, knocking breakable things over. Not safe! It serves it's purpose, but...the screws were basically glued to the packaging. It took me longer to get the screws out of the packaging than it did to put it together. The assembly was easy. I am not mechanically inclined by any means, but the instructions, despite being very hard to read (I have over 40 eyes), were pretty simple. Structurally, it is very wobbly. I think they should have designed it with a middle rod to keep it more stable. I find that the attachments to the rods are wobbly and should have been screwed rather than popped into an attachment hole without reinforcement. That would have also made the room divider more stable. I have cats, but the material is easy to clean. I took a damp cloth to it, and it came right off. As far as see-through...I think it does a great job of masking theO other side of the room.. I just wish it was a little longer and closer to the floor stand. I like that it came with extra parts. It's just a very cheaply made item, and I don't think the price for the item reflects how cheaply it is made, how wobbly and unstable it is, or the poor design.

Taking forever but worth it
Size: 1-Panel, Size: 1-Panel
Love the product. However, trying to take the screws etc out of its box, it’s almost impossible due to the adhesive inside it. I have neck and arm issues so for me it was even more difficult. Adhesive stuck to each washer and screw so I had adhesive all over my hands then I had to get it off of the items.
