The ultimate first geared bike for rider progression
Our 18” wheeled KAPĒL is the perfect first geared bike for a rider that has outgrown their PINTO, or who is new to riding and for whom a 20” geared bike is just too big and daunting. Like its smaller PINTO and SKØG siblings, KAPĒL features our unique EPOK™ growing technologies. If the rider needs to gain some balancing confidence before pedalling and learning the gears, KAPĒL can also be configured as a balance-bike using our optional balance kit. KAPĒL is the ultimate bicycle for your child to develop their riding on, learning to change gears easily, quickly and safely. Our KAPĒL starts life as a small lightweight pedal bike, which is ideal either as a first geared bike or as a natural progression on from any single geared bike. KAPĒL gives your child the chance to gain confidence and develop their cycling skills whilst mastering gears for the first time. Then with our unique patented UP:SCALE growing frame design you can transform the bike into a larger pedal bike as your child grows.
As with all of our UP:SCALE bikes your child doesn’t need to ‘grow into it’ – with KAPĒL you ‘dial’ it down to fit them properly from the start, then as they grow and get stronger, the bike grows and develops with them. And with our UP:RISE stem extender you can also increase the ‘cockpit’ size of the bike very easily. What this means is that KAPĒL fits better, and lasts longer than any other kids’ bike (See here for sizing help).
Our patented ‘growing triangle’ frame allows you to dial the bike down to fit now, and then grow with your child.
Short- reach, easy-pull Tektro® brake levers, with skinny 19mm bars & custom safety grips – optimised for kids.
Our custom saddle and inverted seat clamp, allows the saddle to go extra low for even the smallest rider.
Our unique stem extender that moves the handles bars up 3cm and forward 2cm, giving the rider more room up front.
Super smooth 7–speed gearing to help you charge up the hills and fly down the other side.
CNC rims, extra-long brake arms and Schwalbe Black Jack tyres - for safe handling and braking, even in the wet.
KAPĒL Size & Modes
KAPĒL rolls on 18” wheels and is the first geared bike in the Black Mountain EPOK range. It is aimed at children from around 5 years old, fitting those in the 110cm to 128cm height range, or until they are approximately 7.5 years old (depending on growth rate). KAPĒL is the ideal starter bike for kids transitioning from a single speed bike, like our PINTO, to a fully geared bike. Please use our sizing tool to work out if KAPĒL is right for your child based on their ability and height.
MODE 1
Our KAPĒL starts life as a small lightweight pedal bike, which is ideal either as a first geared bike or as a natural progression on from our 14” PINTO. KAPĒL gives your child the chance to gain confidence and develop their cycling skills whilst mastering gears for the first time.
MODE 2
As your child grows in size and confidence, you simply adjust the UP:SCALE frame system (see here for how this works) to transform KAPĒL into a large pedal bike, which increases the frame size by about 20%. This makes the most of the easy rolling 18” wheel size, and means that the bike will last your child longer.
BALANCE MODE (PURCHASED SEPARATELY)
Some children come to cycling a little later in life and can find gears and pedals confusing at the start. So just like our smaller PINTO and SKØG models you can also set up KAPĒL as a balance bike. You can buy our balance bike seat tube for KAPĒL here (Note: it does not come as standard).
