The Alocasia zebrina, also called striped elephant ear, is an iconic tropical plant native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia. Its absolute uniqueness: its petioles — the stems that hold the leaves — are covered with spectacular yellow-green and black-purple horizontal striped patterns. Such a naturally graphic ornamentation that it creates a strong decorative effect even when the leaves are not visible, placing this plant among the most sought-after Alocasia in the catalog.

It is the only Alocasia whose stems are as decorative as the foliage — making it one of the most recognizable plants to structure a tropical indoor composition around a signature species.

Which Alocasia to choose?

The Alocasia genus in the Verdeia catalog offers a great diversity of shapes and colors. Here are the most distinctive profiles to place this zebrina:

  • Alocasia zebrina (this plant) — yellow-green striped stems with horizontal black-purple patterns, dark green arrow-shaped leaves. The most iconic and graphic in the range.
  • Alocasia wentii — bronze green foliage with spectacular purple-red undersides. The choice for elegant two-tone foliage.
  • Alocasia Lauterbachiana — long, narrow, wavy leaves, very airy habit. The choice for a slimmer, more slender silhouette.
  • Alocasia Macrorrhiza — huge shiny green leaves, very imposing stature. The choice for an XXL statement plant.
  • Alocasia Regal Shield — very large dark green shield-shaped leaves with purple undersides. The choice for majestic two-tone foliage.
  • Alocasia cucullata — large shiny green heart-shaped leaves, the most robust and tolerant. The choice to start with Alocasia.
  • Alocasia Polly — dark green foliage with silvery white veins, compact habit. The choice for a strong graphic contrast in a small space.
  • Alocasia Red Secret — burgundy red foliage evolving towards copper green. The choice for a warm and spectacular palette.

Exposure & location

The Alocasia zebrina enjoys bright indirect light — this is the condition to maintain the vibrant dark green foliage and preserve the intensity of the striped patterns on the stems. In too low light, the stems gradually lose their contrast.

  • Exposure: bright indirect to partial shade — protected from direct sun that burns leaves and dulls the striped patterns.
  • Location: living room, office, bedroom — anywhere with stable and abundant light, at eye level to highlight the graphic petioles.
  • Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
  • Soil type: draining, rich in organic matter — mix of green plant potting soil + perlite or coconut fiber to aerate the root ball.

Place the Alocasia zebrina in a spot where the striped stems are clearly visible at eye level — it is precisely this ornamental quality of the petioles that distinguishes it from all other Alocasia.

Watering & maintenance

The Alocasia zebrina prefers a slightly moist substrate without ever staying soggy — let the top 2 to 3 centimeters dry before watering. Excess water is the main cause of yellowing leaves in large Alocasia.

  • Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, every two weeks in winter.
  • Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate, never stagnant water in the decorative pot.
  • Humidity: 60 to 70% — mist occasionally or group with other tropical plants.
  • Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted once a month in spring and summer.
  • Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves AND stems with a damp cloth — the striped patterns regain all their brightness once dust is removed.
  • Repotting: every 2 years in spring into a slightly larger pot with fresh substrate.

If the leaves yellow at the base, reduce watering immediately — it is almost always overwatering, not underwatering, that triggers this symptom in Alocasia zebrina.

Decor ideas & plant pairings

The striped stems of the Alocasia zebrina make it a statement plant that visually structures any space, ideal for creating a green relaxation corner around a signature species.

  • For a graphic play on striped patterns, pair it with a Calathea zebrina — both plants share the same striped pattern but express it differently: on the stems for the Alocasia, on the leaves for the Calathea, for a coherent and very original thematic duo.
  • For a very architectural XXL tropical composition, place it in the foreground in front of a Strelitzia Nicolai — the graphic striped stems on the ground and the large upright palms above create two very distinct layers in a large-scale composition.
  • For a palm and elephant ear combination, pair it with an Areca — the light, arching fronds of the palm contrast with the large upright leaves of the Alocasia, and the striped stems create the graphic focal point of the arrangement.
  • To highlight the contrast of the stems, place it in an Elho Greenville Round Blanc pot with a matte finish — the light background brings out the yellow-green and black-purple stripes without any color competition.

Slightly elevate the plant on a low piece of furniture or a stand: the zebra petioles are fully revealed when at eye level, where the species' graphic magic works most strongly.

Verdeia tips

  • Clean the stems regularly: dust dulls the contrast between the yellow-green and black-purple patterns — monthly cleaning of the stems AND leaves with a soft damp cloth keeps the zebra stripes at their full graphic brilliance.
  • Turn the plant a quarter turn every two weeks: Alocasia naturally orients its large leaves toward the light — regular rotation ensures a balanced silhouette and exposes the zebra stems on all sides.
  • Repot only when roots come out of the pot: Alocasia zebrina develops a progressive root system and does not like to be repotted too early — wait for roots to appear through the drainage holes before intervening, ideally in spring.

My Dogs Fought Over These!
Size: Large, Color: 6 Packs, Size: Large, Color: 6 Packs
Pack of 6. I specifically ordered a pack of them so each dog would have their own. They still fought over them. lol I only see two of them now because they have hid them from each other. So far, they are holding up well. Heavy enough to toss to them but light enough not to hurt them. Loved the variety of colors. Only issue I have is they are a little small for my mastiff but still giving it 5 stars because the ad stated it was for medium dogs.

Pawesome variety box!
Size: Large, Color: 9 Packs, Size: Large, Color: 9 Packs
I’m a big fan of this box of tug toys. My dog loves to chew and play tug-of-war, and these have been a great fit for him. The quality is solid, and one box typically lasts us around 6 months. He’s now 3.5 years old, so he doesn’t chew as aggressively as he used to, which helps them last even longer. You get a great variety in this box. It’s honestly like Christmas for him every time I bring out a new toy. I usually grab a couple and let him pick. The different shapes and sizes keep things interesting, and he enjoys all of them. The toys are lightweight but very durable, even for an aggressive chewer like mine. The material is made of thinner rope strands, but they’re tightly woven, which makes them ideal for both tugging and chewing. I also think the texture helps with his teeth and keeps them a bit cleaner. I do keep an eye on them once they start to unravel, since I don’t want him swallowing loose strings. That said, it takes a while for him to break them down, so I’m comfortable leaving them with him when I’m not home. I’ve bought several of these boxes over the years. For the price, it’s a great value—about the same cost as a single tug toy at most pet stores. My dog is about 55 lbs, and these are a great size for him. Even the smaller ones get a lot of use. His favorites are the looped ones and the ones with balls—he gets excited every time I pull one out. I’ve tried other tug toy variety packs, and they don’t compare to this one. If you’re looking for a reliable variety pack for your dog, I’d recommend this one with confidence.

Revenge is sweet
Size: Large, Color: 14 Packs
The package arrived promptly. The puppy was ecstatic. She leaped into the pile of toys and went crazy. She tore through one after another. In mere minutes she devoured everything in sight. They never stood a chance. Within an hour or two she had consumed the entire pile of toys. Not to worry they had their revenge. She puked multi color string for days. Overall the toys were fun just not durable.

Very very durable
Size: Large, Color: 9 Packs
So after spending quite a bit of money on toys for a 1-year-old long-haired dachshund because she's a very aggressive chewer I took a chance and bought this rope set and it's been 2 months she still has all her ropes everything I must say this is a very durable set well worth the money well worth the play time she loves tug of war these ropes are great for tug of war she has not chewed through any of them she has tried to take them apart which she had succeeded on one but I put a few knots in it and other than that I would recommend this rope set to anyone that's got a dog that likes the fat especially play tug of war or is a very very aggressive sure
