Araucaria cunninghamii Bonsai – Plant Description

Araucaria cunninghamii, commonly known as the Hoop Pine, is a majestic evergreen conifer native to Australia and Papua New Guinea. In the wild, it can grow to more than 60 metres tall, forming part of ancient subtropical rainforests. As a bonsai, however, this species is trained and maintained at a miniature scale, becoming an elegant and distinctive ornamental tree.

The Hoop Pine bonsai is characterised by its upright, symmetrical growth habit and dense whorls of needle-like foliage. The fine, linear leaves are deep green, forming neat sprays along evenly spaced branches. Its natural tendency to grow in a conical shape lends itself beautifully to bonsai styling, evoking the look of a mature forest tree in miniature.

Unlike many broadleaf bonsai, Araucaria cunninghamii brings a coniferous charm, with foliage that remains evergreen throughout the year. Its formal, architectural structure makes it particularly suited for upright bonsai styles such as Chokkan (formal upright) or Moyogi (informal upright).

Araucaria cunninghamii Bonsai – Care Guide

Light

Requires bright light for healthy growth. Outdoors, place in full sun to partial shade. Indoors, it should be positioned in the brightest location possible, ideally by a south-facing window or under grow lights.

Watering

Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Hoop Pine does not tolerate prolonged drought; however, it also dislikes sitting in soggy conditions. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. In hot weather, daily checks are recommended.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers mild conditions of 15–24°C. It is frost-sensitive and must be protected from cold temperatures below 10°C.

  • Humidity: Appreciates moderate humidity. If grown indoors, mist occasionally or place near a humidity tray to prevent browning of needle tips.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix containing akadama, pumice, and lava rock, or a free-draining sandy loam. Repot every 2–3 years in spring, pruning roots carefully to avoid stress.

Feeding

Feed every 4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced bonsai fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and stop in winter when growth slows.

Pruning and Training

Prune back new growth regularly to maintain shape and encourage denser foliage. Wiring can be used carefully on young branches, but avoid excessive bending, as older wood is brittle. Pinching back candles or new shoots helps refine the silhouette.

Growth and Maturity

As a bonsai, Araucaria cunninghamii develops into a refined miniature tree with strong vertical structure and layered foliage. With patience and careful shaping, it can resemble a stately conifer forest giant in miniature form.

Common Issues

  • Brown needle tips: Usually caused by low humidity or underwatering.

  • Yellowing foliage: May indicate poor drainage or nutrient deficiency.

  • Pests: Occasionally susceptible to scale insects or spider mites; inspect foliage regularly.

Background and Benefits

Hoop Pines have been growing for millions of years and are living reminders of ancient coniferous forests. As a bonsai, Araucaria cunninghamii captures this prehistoric majesty in miniature, offering an elegant evergreen focal point that remains decorative year-round.

Great plot, steamy goodness, and absolute heartbreak, what more could you want?
Format: Paperback
“I’d already concluded a long time ago that I would never love someone the way I’d loved Wren—the way I still loved her. Because it didn’t matter if it had been ten days or ten years. A love like that ruined you for all others.” Suspenseful, Heartbreaking and Surprising! I have only read one other Catherine Cowles book; Tattered Stars and I loved it just as much as I love Whispers of You. The thing I love about this book (and the other) is also my one complaint. She has found the magic potion for a perfect romantic suspense. And maybe I wouldn't be saying this, if I had finished the other series, before starting this. I also know my opinion is so limited having only read two out of her incredibly extensive backlist. BUT the two I have read, feel very similar to each other, So much so that I look back now, a week after reading Whispers of You and I am getting them confused in my head. Thats not to say I didn't LOVE both books, because I absolutely did. This just felt like a plug and play equation to perfection with changing the details around. That being said this book grabs you from the prologue and doesn't give your heart a break until the very end. Holt and Wrens story is heartbreaking, I do wish we would have gotten a glimpse of the good before the bad, more often through the book to further the draw between them. But that's not because I feel like its lacking, its more that I loved the love these two had for each other and I would have enjoyed seeing it before either of them suffered through the tainted lenses of loss and fear. I loved the side characters and as the story progressed, I began to wonder who the culprit was, I did have one right but was dead nuts wrong on the other so both my mind was blown, and my heart was broken at the same time when I found out. Catherine Cowles keeps your heart in a vice the entire story and I love her for that. I am new to romantic suspense but am prone to panic attacks (HA) so, I find that her writing is just enough and not too much for me to read without sending me in to a tizzy. Overall though I do love this book, and I look forward to Echos of you and the second one in Tattered and Torn series, I just think I might finish that series before I keep going so, I can keep them straight.

Stunning Second Chance Romance
Format: Paperback
Well, I truly began my February reading in the best way with this book. I was so excited to read it after absolutely loving the Tattered and Torn series and it DELIVERED my friends. It has all of the emotions, all of the beauty, all of the suspense I’ve come to adore in Catherine’s books turned up even just a little more. Dare I say she even turned up the spice a bit?? Phew with the heat between these two! Along with the suspense element we get served small town, an over protective hero, and the most heart melting of second chance romances. Right from the prologue this book is off and running, I was not prepared for it. You meet Wren and hear about her gorgeous love for Holt. An absolutely horrific event occurs though that we learn sends him running for 10 years, and makes her a ghost of her former self after losing him. Neither of them, especially Holt, handled the aftermath well. It made me love them more though to see the growth they go through when he comes back and they reforge their intense, soul deep connection. Both of them face a whole lot of demons. I also love that even though it was completely awful for them both to be apart, Holt leaving forces Wren to become independent and stand on her own. So their second time around, it’s an even stronger, more equal relationship. If you follow my feed closely, you also know that I am always gone for a found family dynamic, and we have that here in spades with the way the Hartleys watch out for Wren. Her relationship with Holt’s parents and siblings is just gorgeous. The way Holt heals his relationship with them all is wonderful too. I’m already deeply in love with Nash and cannot WAIT for his book next. Yes to a new family saga series, please and thank you!!! I can’t recommend this one enough.

Definitely reading more by this author!!!
Format: Paperback
I really enjoyed this book! I absolutely love Holt and Wren. I loved watching them come back together and admit their feelings for each other. What I loved most was the mystery and suspension all throughout this book! It had me hooked from the very beginning, and just when I thought I knew who the culprit was, it was twisted to someone I never expected! I’ll definitely be reading more by this author 🫶🏻
