The Blue Torch Cactus, known as Pilosocereus pachycladus, is popular and a low-maintenance cactus admired for its bold color and sculptural form. With its tall, upright growth and powdery blue-green stems, it instantly brings a modern, desert-inspired aesthetic to any space. Whether used in landscaping or as a statement plant in containers, this cactus stands out as a true visual centerpiece.

This cactus is commonly known as the Blue Torch Cactus, Blue Columnar Cactus, or simply Blue Cactus. It belongs to the Pilosocereus genus, which includes several species known for their bluish tones and column-like growth. These common names reflect both its distinctive color and its upright, torch-like shape.

Native to Brazil, the Blue Torch Cactus is known for its impressive size and structure. In the wild, it can grow up to 33 feet tall, with thick, branching columns that may reach up to 4 feet wide.

When grown in containers, however, it remains more manageable while still maintaining its bold, vertical presence.

Its ribbed stems are covered in clusters of golden spines, adding texture and visual interest.

During the late spring to early summer, mature Blue Torch Cacti produce large, fragrant white flowers that open at night.

These blooms often feature subtle greenish or reddish outer tones, creating a beautiful contrast against the blue stems.

After flowering, the plant may develop small, rounded fruits that range in color from reddish to purplish, adding another layer of appeal.

What truly sets this cactus apart is its combination of color, size, and architectural form. The upright blue stems, highlighted by golden spines, create a dramatic and almost surreal look that works well in modern gardens, xeriscapes, and decorative pots.

When and How to Water Your Blue Torch Cactus

The Blue Torch cacti  thrive when cared for properly by using the "soak and dry" technique. This involves giving your plant a generous watering followed by allowing it to completely dry out before watering again.

The Pilosocereus pachycladus should be watered every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer with minimal watering once a month in winter.

Make sure that you are also using porous sandy soil and make sure if it is in a pot, then make sure there is a drainage hole to avoid overwatering. It's best to withhold watering your outdoor cacti in rainy seasons or cold weather.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Blue Torch Cactus

When growing indoors, you can place it near a south or west facing window, where it can receive enough sunlight each day.

For the best results, position the plant less than one foot from the window so it can absorb as much natural light as possible.

To prevent the cactus from leaning toward the light, rotate the pot every few weeks so all sides are evenly exposed.

When growing outdoors, you should expose this cactus to direct sunlight every day for up to 4-6 hours.

Learn to adjust your blue torch cactus to avoid burns if the location where you have the plant is exposed to a lot of direct sunlight throughout. Gradually increase the exposure until it can handle the full sun.

During a heatwave or other short periods of extreme heat, your blue torch cactus could still sustain sun damage or get sunburned. You can protect this very low-maintenance plant in this situation by moving it indoors or to a bright, shade area.

Optimal Size & Fertilizer Needs

The blue torch plants prefer very airy, sandy soil that drains well. Planting these wildly unique house plants in regular soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and, most likely, root rot. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally, use our specialized potting mixGo to soil cactus mix blend 1 gal 4 qt cacti succulent dirt compost growing media, which contains organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that will help your cactus thrive.

For a healthy blue torch cactus plant, use a balanced, low-strength fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 5-10-5, with slightly higher phosphorus than nitrogen. It's always best to fertilize your plant once a year in spring, during the growing season.

During winter dormancy, reduce or completely stop fertilizing your blue torch cactus, as it can lead to weak, stretched growth that is more prone to damage.

Hardiness Zones & More

In the United States, this 'Pilosocereus pachycladus' is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 9-11.

These cacti thrive in full sun and can grow between 10 to 20 feet tall under the right conditions.

In terms of temperature tolerance, they are sensitive to frost and are generally hardy only down to around 25 to 30°F, so protection is needed in colder climates to prevent damage.

In cooler zones, it can be kept outdoors during the hot summer months and brought in as the temperature drops.

How to Grow as an Indoor Houseplant

When you're growing your blue torch cactus indoors, it thrives in low humidity and does best in dry, and arid conditions. It prefers a warm temperatures between 60°F and 75°F during the growing season.  Avoid placing it in humid areas like bathrooms or near kitchens where moisture builds up.

You can place it in a very sunny spot, ideally a south-facing window, so it can get at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its blue color. If your space does not get enough sunlight, adding a grow light can keep the plant compact and vibrant. With the right light, soil, and watering routine, your blue torch cactus can grow steadily indoors and become a striking, low maintenance addition to your space. Give it a light watering to help it settle, but avoid overwatering.

Wildlife -  Blue Torch Cactus Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

Blue Torch Cactus can attract friendly pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects. These pollinators play a crucial role in the ecosystem by aiding in the reproduction of plants and ensuring biodiversity.

Bees
Hummingbirds

According to ASPCA, the blue torch cactus is not considered toxic to humans or pets. However, it's always a good idea to practice caution and keep plants out of reach of curious pets or small children.

How to Propagate Your Blue Torch cactus

To propagate a blue torch cactus, it can be done by stem cutting. Start with a healthy stem cutting about 4 to 12 inches long, ideally taken during spring or summer. Let the cutting dry for a few days until the cut end forms a callus.

After that, plant it in well draining succulent soil, and place the callused end about an inch deep to keep the cutting upright and stable. Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture buildup. Place it in bright, indirect light and water lightly only when the soil is completely dry to prevent rot while it develops roots.

Mounting process could have been easier but still a beautiful cabinet
Color: White, Style: Wall Cabinet, Color: White, Style: Wall Cabinet
Beautiful cabinet seems to be good quality I just keep admiring something so beautiful about the white. The extra hardware is thoughtful. With some master skills I was able to get it mounted perfect. It was not a breeze but nonetheless I always find a way. I found the best way to mount this was to hold it against the wall and follow the pre-drilled holes at the bottom to drill the holes into the wall that wasnt that hard But for the top anchor/screws, the cabinet did not have pre-drilled holes and I was not about to guess !! So I used alien tape to tape the top wood bar to the unit as shown in pic then took the cabinet lined up the bottom holes while holding the cabinet up then I drilled holes through the unit with a small bit just to get the whole going then took it back down then followed the same holes with a bigger bit and it worked for me. It hung level. It was crazy that the pre-holes were not 16” apart when they could have been. I added extra screws to be able to mount them to a stud I didn’t feel comfortable with it not being mounted to a stud. The screws I had were too long gonna have to get some shorter screws. But it’s up & looks so nice DO NOT USE 11/32 bit. Don’t even use 5/16. I use 1/4 and kinda ran the drill in a circle to widen the whole and it was the perfect tight fit All in all I do love the cabinet. Just feel the mounting process could have been instructed more conveniently

I absolutely love this cabinet. It’s super well-made easy to put together and the space is great. I’ve already received some compliments. Thought it would guests. Come to my home. Just look at how nice it pairs with my bathroom. The handles are sturdy. There’s also a nice tag inside with the company’s name. If you’re looking for a bathroom cabinet, highly recommended this one is well worth it. Love it!!!

Excellent Cabinet for someone good at mounting a cabinet
Color: White, Style: Wall Cabinet
The cabinet arrived very well packaged with an instruction booklet, hardware, and an Allen wrench. The booklet says you will just need a Phillips screwdriver, but you will also need a drill with an appropriate bit (more on the bit later) to mount the cabinet on the wall. Assembling the cabinet was simplified by how well the cabinet pieces and hardware were labeled and referenced in the instruction booklet. The holes in all the cabinet parts lined up nicely. The doors swing on spring loaded pivots. They are not adjustable, but work well and are probably much less expensive than European style hinges. I was concerned that the doors would not line up, but they look fine. The Magnetic Latch also works well, but the little piece of wood that it mounts on fell off during assembly so I glued it back in place. This was the only problem I had assembling the cabinet. I let the glue dry overnight and mounted the cabinet the next day. The wood support plate they ship with the cabinet is a great way to hang a cabinet, however I did have some problems using the supplied anchors. I recommend having some other anchors and screws available in case you have similar issues. Skip this paragraph if you do not care about the details: I mounted the cabinet on drywall. The instructions said to drill 11/32” holes for the supplied plastic wall anchors. I did not have an 11/32” bit so I used a 5/16” bit. Even though my holes were 1/32” smaller than specified, the anchors slid into the drywall very easily without having to tap them. I recommend using a 5/16” bit or even a 9/32” bit instead of the 11/32” they specify. Next I mounted the support plate with the supplied screws, but I could not get the screws tight enough to hold the plate securely in place. It felt like the screws were too small in diameter so I used some slightly larger screws. That worked fine for one of the screws holding the plate and the two lower screws, but the second screw through the plate would not bite and hold the plate firmly. Fortunately I had one HILTI 3/16” hollow wall metal anchor left over from a previous project and was able to get the plate very solidly attached to the wall. My wife is very pleased with the cabinet. I did have some trouble with the latch and the install so I was tempted to knock off a star, but I think this is a 5-Star item considering the low cost and how well the the cabinet parts aligned with each other.

Love and amazing for the price!
Color: White, Style: Wall Cabinet, Color: White, Style: Wall Cabinet
Perfect! I'm a renter and didn't want to spend an arm and a leg on something that might not work in the next place so this looked like it would be a good fit. I really wasn't expecting much for the price point but I was VERY pleasantly surprised. It's a great piece. I love assembling things (I'm an Ikea pro) but this had literally the easiest and most explicit instructions I have ever seen. Every piece is clearly labeled. The hardware comes in a bubble pack, again clearly labeled. Rhe instructions are very clear. Another thing I appreciated was the mounting mechanism which is a French cleat. It is much easier to level and screw in a cleat than to recruit help and try to hold a cabinet in place and try screwing it in. I'm a fat middle age woman and I had no problem mounting it by myself. Notice there are no screws visible on the outside. That was a huge selling point for me. Only con is that for the quality of everything else, the shelves are on the thin side, placing anything substantial would definitely make them bow. Background is a scrap of peel-and-stick.

Good cabinet choice
Color: White, Style: Wall Cabinet
I needed a wall cabinet for a recessed area above the toilet. This one fits the area perfectly and provides a good amount of storage in an otherwise wasted space. It looks good as it coordinates well with my white shaker style cabinets elsewhere in the room. It was easy to assemble, doors lined up perfectly, and mounting was a breeze with the included screws and hardware. It doesn't get hard use in this location, but seems sturdy after almost a year.
