Grow your own spice with a live Black Pepper Vine (Piper nigrum), the tropical climbing plant that produces the peppercorns we know as black pepper. This beautiful self-fertile vine thrives in warm, humid conditions and, once mature, will produce clusters of green berries. Harvest them when they begin to turn red, then dry the berries until they wrinkle and darken—transforming them into the aromatic black peppercorns you grind fresh in the kitchen. Perfect for gardeners who love unique edible plants, this pepper vine can be trained on a trellis or grown in a container and brought indoors in cooler climates, giving you a rewarding way to grow and harvest one of the world’s most popular spices right at home.
How long will it take to start harvesting? Approximately 1-3 years if grown in ideal conditions. Once the vines start flowering, it takes 9 months to be able to harvest the pepper berries.
Ideal Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 9-13. Protect young plants if temperatures drop below 40F.
Height/width at maturity: Vines can get around 15FT long at maturity
Sun: Grows best in part shade
Soil: grows best in loamy soil heavy in composted organic matter.
Water: Monitor young plants and keep consistent water.
Fertilizer: Fertilize in early spring to encourage new vine growth
Harvest: It will take 1-2 years for a starter plant this size to start flowering. Then it takes 9 months for the flower to form into a harvestable pepper berry.
