Passiflora incarnata is a fast-growing vine that loves to climb with its tendrils. In warmer winter climates, this beautiful plant stays woody, while in colder areas, it returns to the earth. Native to the Southeastern U.S., it delights us with its three-lobed, deep green leaves and stunning, fringed flowers that measure about 2.5 inches across. These lovely blooms, adorned with white petals and sepals, feature a crown of pinkish-purple filaments and fill the summer air with their sweet fragrance. Starting in July, you can find the egg-shaped maypops—these edible fruits turn yellow in the fall as they ripen. Enjoy them fresh from the vine or turn them into delicious jelly! The name "maypop" comes from the popping sound the fruits make when stepped on.
This wonderful plant thrives in average, medium, well-drained soils and flourishes in full sun to partial shade. It’s also quite drought-tolerant, and adding a loose mulch around its roots helps it grow even better. With its ability to spread through root suckers, it can cover large areas when conditions are just right. Although P. incarnata is the most resilient of the passion flowers, it might not always survive the winter in USDA Zone 5, especially during very cold winters.
