Inspired by the match-made-in-heaven of vintage effects found on 60s American amps, the second version of the White Whale sets out a new objective to pack bigger real spring reverb and tremolo sounds in the same pedalboard friendly enclosure as the previous unit.

The 3-spring reverb tank assembly housed inside White Whale’s enclosure has remained the same, but we have upgraded the power amp driving the springs for increased headroom and wider frequency response. Following the signal topography of the vintage units we have included a dwell control to allow you to dial the amount of signal that goes into the springs for a mellower or splashier reverb sound. Real spring reverb found in 60s American tube amps and external reverb units, like Fender® 6G15®, featured a tube power amp driving the spring assembly via an output transformer so we have delicately tuned an analog circuit to emulate the tube and output transform- er saturation that was produced on higher dwell settings. Each of these vintage units had its own reverb effect qualities so we tried to categorize them according to the most emblematic ones with a toggle switch selecting the size and decay. The user can select between the thinner and milder reverb qualities of a short to medium 2-spring reverb tank, the liveliness of a medium to long 2-spring reverb tank as found in most blackface amp designs and the dense reverb qualities of a long 3-spring reverb tank assembly. Note that the difference in reverb size and decay comes from carefully tuned all analog tone shaping filters before the reverb driver (power amp) - the spring reverb assembly used in all 3 settings is always the same. A reverb’s tone control comes after the recovery stage at the output of the reverb tank and affects only the wet sounds for lively and drippy or smooth and mild reverb tones. Use the mix control to blend your desired amount of wet sounds on top of dry guitar signal. Higher reverb mix settings tend to get lost in the mix, so we’ve made sure you’ll be heard loud and clear by incorporating a volume control capable of 20db boost.

The tremolo section has also been upgraded to feature harmonic tremolo. This hypnotic sounding effect originated on certain models of the brown and blonde era Fender® amps and does frequency-based modulation by shifting between high and low frequencies compared to the amplitude-based modulation (photocell and tube bias) that shifts between volume levels. The result is harmonious and mesmerizing and we’ve made sure to include the two most significant variations of the effect as found in the original amps that differentiate in the range and sweep of pulsating frequencies. The photocell and tube bias shifting style amplitude modulation/tremolo effects are the same as found in the previous incarnation of our “marine mammal”. The depth control sets the intensity of modulation while we’ve extended the range of the speed control beyond the span of vintage amps’ to make sure we’ll maximize your creativity. The volume control will boost the signal, if needed, even in the hardest throb settings.

Another upgrade found in the updated version is that the two effect sections are now completely independent and you can select the effects order so that the tremolo effect comes before the reverb or vice versa. This gives you the option to make heavenly combinations as optical and tube bias style tremolo usually sound better when placed after (post) the reverb effect while the harmonic tremolo usually sounds better when placed in front (pre) of the reverb effect. The two onboard footswitches are used to engage or bypass each effect section and feature a power-up bypass/engage pre-set function. That way you can select which state your pedal will go to when you plug the power supply. White Whale also features a remote switcher input jack where you can control the bypass state of each effect section remotely via your favorite external effects switcher or via the matching artwork remote control dual footswitch (sold separately). Reverb’s mix can also be controlled via an expression pedal and tremolo’s speed can be controlled by either an expres- sion pedal or external tap tempo footswitch (expression pedals / tap tempo footswitch are not included).

The surf-friendly light green colour adds to the overall drippy experience of a real spring reverb and tremolo that will fit on your pedalboard. If you are amp doesn’t have these effects by design, you have now found your perfect match.

Watch holds up in saltwater!
Color: Black/Gray
I bought this watch to use for my trip to the Galapagos Islands. I read two reviews that the watch does not hold up in salt water. I went snorkeling in the ocean 6 times, about 45 minutes each time. The watch did not leak. I did take precautions by keeping the watch under my rash guard and lowering myself slowly into the water. I also rinsed off my watch each time I snorkeled. I also bought this watch for the multi time zone feature by saving the time on the west coast, east coast and Galapagos time since I cannot change the time on my Fitbit until I land in an airport. I did not use any other features of the watch because I generally use my phone or Fitbit for an alarm or timer. The only complaint I have is that Timex now discourages changing the battery by the consumer. I changed the battery myself on my old Ironman watch. The new Ironman watch is fitted with triangular head screws. So I will have to purchase screwdrivers with triangular heads when it comes time to change the battery.

Reliable and durable, even in harsh conditions
Color: Black/Gray
This watch has served me very well. From Arctic waters to long distance races, it has held up to everything except one task I asked of it, which was my fault. This watch can handle repeated free dives to 12 ft deep. It cannot handle scuba diving at the same depth for an hour straight without needing to have the battery shorted to reset it. It fits well, lights up consistently and brightly enough to read without being blinding, keeps accurate time, and generally does everything I want it to.

The Ironman logo is a serious distraction.
Color: Black/Black/Digital Neg Display
A wonderful watch, with one serious problem: for me at least. The big Ironman Logo at 9 O'clock position is a very confusing element in this otherwise nice design: it competes and completely overwhelms the two Hands read-out. The Logo can give you misleading time: because one confuses it for the Minutes Hand. In a hurry, one is bound to make such mistakes -- call it a human error, but this one can have serious consequences, i.e. reading the wrong time. I have a couple of digital Ironman watches, and Timex does a great job with their usability and quality. This watch is of very high quality too. I love the dual display, and it is very practical. All this watch needs is a removal of the white Ironman logo. That would also make reading the digital readout easier. Please leave the Minute and Hour hand to their exact shape/design -- i.e. don't mess it up. This watch has the potential to be a much more user-friendly watch. I hope the next gen has a simple dial with hopefully even an easier digital readout. Please color the 'Start' Button Orange. I love the Orange Seconds hand. Overall: Size is good. Strap is good. A very good concept digi-ana. Very practical.
