The wild rosehip, also called dog rose, canine rose, shepherd's rose, or hedge rose, is an emblematic plant of our countryside. This native, robust, and generous rose offers magnificent simple flowers, pale pink to white, followed in early autumn by red rose hips, prized for teas, jams, or syrups.
This robust plant forms pretty thorny bushes that can reach 2 to 3 meters high, highly appreciated by birds for their melliferous properties and natural shelter.
Uses:
-
Rose hips are harvested after the first frosts to make infusions, jams, or tonic syrups.
-
Very useful plant in permaculture to create defensive hedges, stabilize slopes, and promote biodiversity.
- Often used in horticulture to graft other roses.
Growing tips:
-
Sowing in autumn or cold stratification recommended for 6 to 8 weeks before spring sowing.
-
Sow in pots or directly in the ground, 1 cm deep, in well-drained soil.
