Euphorbia resinifera, commonly known as the resin spurge or Moroccan mound, is a succulent native to the rocky slopes of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. It is a dense, low-growing shrub that forms large, cushion-like clumps of succulent, cactus-like stems.
KEY FEATURES
· Stems: Erect and four-sided, the stems are typically bluish-green or lime-green in color and resemble columns. They are lined with short, sharp, brownish spines in pairs along the ridges.
· Size: Mature plants can form clumps up to 2 feet high and spread up to 6 feet wide.
· Flowers: The flowers are small, cup-shaped structures called cyathia. They are yellow-orange and develop along the stem margins in late winter or early spring. They rarely bloom outside of their native habitat.
· Sap: Like many plants in the Euphorbia genus, it produces a milky white latex sap when damaged. This sap is toxic and can cause skin and eye irritation.
CARE REQUIREMENTS
· Light: E. resinifera thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. It keeps a more compact shape in sunnier locations.
· Soil: It requires well-draining soil, such as a commercial cactus mix amended with pumice or gravel. Poor drainage can lead to root rot.
· Water: It is a drought-tolerant plant with low water needs. Water sparingly, only when the soil is nearly dry, and significantly reduce watering during the winter months.
· Hardiness: This species is heat-tolerant and moderately cold-hardy, surviving temperatures down to about 20°F (-7°C).
· Pests and diseases: E. resinifera is relatively resistant to pests and diseases, though it may occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites.
· Propagation: It can be propagated by stem cuttings.
TOXICITY & MEDICAL USE
The milky sap of Euphorbia resinifera contains a compound called resiniferatoxin, a potent analog of capsaicin, the active ingredient in chili peppers.
· Warning: The sap is highly irritating and toxic. Gloves and protective eyewear should be worn when handling the plant to prevent contact with the skin and eyes. It is also poisonous if ingested.
· Historical use: The dried latex, called "euphorbium," was used in ancient medicine as a purgative and emetic.
· Modern research: Resiniferatoxin has been investigated for its potential analgesic (pain-relieving) properties.
