San Pedro cactus with a rare brain-like, wavy appearance

This fast-growing mutation creates a unique, cliff-like comb that can become very large and impressive over time.

The common San Pedro cactus ' Echinopsis pachanoi ' is a perennial cactus with light green stems that form a small tree 3-6 meters tall. However, the tallest recorded San Pedro cactus measured 12.2 meters! This mutant form can also grow very large, creating a stunning specimen with its wavy growth points that spread unhindered.

The species produces white flowers at the ends of the stems that open at night and last for about two days. However, this form rarely flowers due to the mutant form.

Botanical description

Trichocereus pachanoi (now often called Echinopsis pachanoi ) is a fast-growing cactus from the Andes at 2000-3000 meters altitude in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and parts of Chile and Argentina. The species has been used in traditional medicine and religious divination in the Andes for over 3000 years.

In Peruvian shamanism, called mesa norteña, healers (curanderos) boil San Pedro cacti with the thorns removed into a bitter drink called cimora, often mixed with tobacco to enhance spiritual visions. This brew helps shamans gain "vista" (magical vision) to diagnose illnesses, cleanse spirits, and connect with ancestors or nature spirits at sacred sites.

Echinopsis pachanoi contains a number of alkaloids, including mescaline, which explains its psychoactive properties and traditional use.

Care

Echinopsis pachanoi f. cristata is very easy to grow and hardy down to -12°C when dry. Because it grows naturally in the Andes at high altitudes with high rainfall, it can withstand temperatures well below many other cacti for a day or two if they are dry.

Requires fertile, well-drained soil, a good mix includes a light inorganic substrate such as pumice or perlite. Water well and allow to dry before watering again. This species seems to do better with a little more water than most cacti, its growing requirements are more similar to "normal" plants than other cacti.

Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a balanced nutrient. Outdoors full sun, but in hot summers the cactus can be exposed to sunburn so grow in light shade. Indoors it needs bright light and some direct sun.

During the winter months, place in a cool bright location and encourage winter dormancy by withholding water and fertilizing, otherwise they will become slender due to lower light levels. Susceptible to fungal diseases from overwatering, especially if kept damp during cold periods.

San Pedro produces good growth every year (up to 30 cm) if fed and watered well during the hottest months, especially if acclimatized to full sun.

Warning: Contains mescaline and other alkaloids that are psychoactive and regulated in many countries, including Sweden. Grown only as an ornamental cactus. Buy San Pedro cactus online!

Engaging and Different!
Format: Hardcover
Looking for a new kid's author to try now that Harry Potter has retired to a quiet life out of the spotlight? Try Stuart Gibbs. His first novel, Belly Up, is an engaging mix of mystery, humor, and adventure (as well as lots of trivia about the animal kingdom ranging from the fascinating to the . . . well, I'll let you read the book!) The story takes place at FunJungle, a huge new zoo/amusement park filled with many colorful characters. When the not-so-loveable mascot of the park, Henry the Hippo, turns up (literally) dead one day, only 12-year old Teddy, the son of two zoo employees, recognizes that this was no random event and begins his investigation only to find himself a target. The book is perfect for the 5th-8th grade crowd (although very enjoyable for us grown-ups who haven't quite grown up yet and still love well-crafted young adult titles). I'll definitely be following his next book (not a sequel to this but an adventure based on the Three Musketeers when they were younger) which looks like will be available this fall.

Amazing but one problem
Format: Kindle
I LOVE this book but the one problem is that there are curse words. I'm 12 and I'm aware that Stuart Gibbs curses but I feel like in this particular book he cursed a lot more than he usually does but other than that I absolutely LOVED reading this I will get the whole series for sure! If you already have read this whole series and want to read more I highly recommend spy school ( all of them there are I believe 13 of them) and space case.

Fun for Kids of All Ages
Format: Paperback
Belly Up is a hit with my 8-year-old son, and even my 14-year-old can’t get enough of it! The story is funny, adventurous, and full of clever twists that appeal to both younger and older readers. It’s perfect for kids who love animals, mystery, and humor — a book that keeps everyone hooked from start to finish.

LOVE book...but a few swear words....
Format: Paperback
I LOVE this book! I love the plot! But, I would of reviewed this book 5 stars if: First, there are a few swear words throughout the book! As a kid, I find it disappointing to find a couple swear words in a kids book! The swear words, (a**, h***,d***) are used very loosely. I mean come on! Adding those swear words do NOT add to the plot and just make the book a 4 star review. Also, as a devoted Christian, I also find it disappointing that the characters say a couple of things ( God knows...., God....). If you are going to buy this book, I would make sure you're fine with a bit of language and some stuff......The plot is lovely, definitely a mystery book. The book definitely makes you think and get engaged. Finished book in 5 days and want the rest of the series. But if you buy this book, be careful of the swear words. I will read this book again....
