Dahlia Decorative Mix is packed with bold, colorful decorative dahlias that grow 36 to 48 inches tall, creating an eye-catching display in any garden. Each random mix offers a unique assortment of vibrant blooms that will brighten your beds, borders, or bouquets all season long. Blooming from midsummer to the first frost, these dahlias keep rewarding youthe more you cut, the more they bloom! Be sure to pick flowers when they're nearly open for the best results, as they won't open much after cutting.
The Dahlia Decorative Mix includes clump-forming, tender perennials (Zones 9-11) with an upright habit. These plants are perfect for mass planting in garden beds or grouped in borders, though they can also thrive in patio containers. To support their height, staking or caging may be helpful for these lively beauties.
These dahlias are simple to grow and thrive in full sun with nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. Amend heavy clay or sandy soil with organic matter, like peat moss, to create the perfect growing environment. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season. Pinch back stems at 8 to 10 inches to encourage bushy growth, fertilize in spring and late summer, and apply mulch to retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Divide tubers in the fall to ensure a fresh start for next year!
Plant tubers outdoors in warm spring soil after frost danger has passed, spacing them 12 to 36 inches apart and planting them 3 inches deep. For a jump start, plant tubers indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date in small pots filled with potting mix. Transplant them outdoors once temperatures are reliably warm.
NOTE: In Zones 3-7, lift and store tubers indoors before frost in dry peat moss or vermiculite at 50°F. Or enjoy this mix as annuals for bursts of color anywhere!
