Endemic
to the remote island of Socotra—a biodiversity hotspot often called the “Galápagos of the Indian Ocean”—Ficus socotrana is an exceptionally rare species prized by caudiciform collectors and fig lovers alike. This form, S&L 255, comes from a known seed collection and offers striking architecture from the very beginning.

At its base, the plant develops a woody, rounded caudex that can eventually become bulbous and gnarled with age. Above, broad, leathery leaves rise on upright stems, giving the plant a proud, prehistoric look. It’s the kind of plant that draws attention quietly—sculptural, grounded, and full of character.

This species thrives in bright light and warm, dry conditions—think: desert air with occasional monsoon.  It grows most actively during the warmer months and prefers a distinct dry rest in winter, when it may drop its leaves to conserve energy. Water more generously when in active growth, but ensure the roots never sit in wet soil—this is a fig that loves fast drainage and deep roots.
