Common Name: Peacock Spikemoss, Rainbow Moss, Blue Spikemoss, Peacock Clubmoss, Rainbow Clubmoss, Blue Clubmoss
Scientific Name: Selaginella uncinata
This dazzling variety of clubmoss is treasured for its luminous, jewel-toned foliage. Its delicate, fern-like leaves shimmer with iridescent shades of blue, teal, and emerald green, creating a peacock-inspired glow that seems to shift with the light.
Unlike true mosses, this ancient “clubmoss” relative forms soft, spreading mats of finely textured foliage, making it perfect for terrariums, dish gardens, and decorative containers. Its low-growing, cascading habit adds a lush, woodland feel to any indoor space, terrarium, or enclosure.
Selaginella ‘Peacock Rainbow’ thrives in bright, indirect light and loves consistent moisture and humidity. With the right care, it rewards you with vibrant color and a soft, carpet-like texture.
-Care Recommendations By The Dude-
Best for These Animals: Small tropical and semi-tropical reptiles and amphibians, especially small tropical frogs, skinks, and salamanders.
Bio Dude Substrates: TerraFlora, TerraFauna
Soil Depth: Shallow to moderate with proper drainage.
Lighting: Low to medium indirect light. Placement under a heat or basking light will result in burn.
Humidity & Misting: 60%-100%, with higher humidity levels suggested for optimal growth.
Mature Plant Size & Root System: This primitive plant belongs to one of the oldest plant groups called clubmosses. They will reach a mature height of only a few inches, quickly forming a mat of foliage if given the right conditions. Their very simple, thin, fibrous root systems are shallow but allow for maximum water absorption with high enough humidity. Roots will also sometimes hang down several inches from the club-like leaves and dig into the soil.
Temperature Tolerance & Placement in the Terrarium: Too high temperatures/low humidity may cause leaves to brown. Best used as a front (low) groundcover or underplanting.
Edible & Side Effects if Ingested: Non-toxic if consumed, though these are typically used for ornamental, not edible, purposes
Pot Size & Packaging: A single 6" potted clubmoss plant is shipped in the pot, wrapped in paper.
