Sansevieria Cylindrica 'Boncel' | The Starfish Snake Plant

Sansevieria Cylindrica 'Boncel' is a captivating succulent that stands out from the crowd of other snake plants. Its unique, fan-shaped form and robust, cylindrical leaves have earned it the common name "Starfish Snake Plant." This low-maintenance and visually striking plant is a fantastic choice for both novice and experienced gardeners, adding a modern, architectural element to any indoor space.

Full Description

Sansevieria Cylindrica 'Boncel' is a dwarf cultivar of the Sansevieria cylindrica species. Instead of the tall, upright spears of its parent plant, 'Boncel' features short, chubby, cylindrical leaves that grow outwards in a fan-like or rosette pattern, resembling a starfish. The leaves are typically a light green to gray-green with subtle, dark green concentric bands. This compact and slow-growing plant usually reaches a height of 1-2 feet and spreads with "pups" or new shoots that emerge from the base.

Like other snake plants, 'Boncel' is renowned for its air-purifying qualities, filtering common indoor toxins like formaldehyde and benzene. It's a succulent that stores water in its thick leaves, making it highly drought-tolerant and forgiving of neglect.

Growing Tips

  • Soil: The most crucial factor for a healthy 'Boncel' is well-draining soil. Use a cactus or succulent potting mix, or create your own by mixing regular potting soil with sand, perlite, or pumice to ensure good drainage and prevent waterlogged roots.

  • Fertilizer: 'Boncel' is not a heavy feeder. You can apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer formulated for succulents or houseplants once a month during the active growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter.

  • Pruning: This plant requires minimal pruning. Simply remove any yellowed, dead, or damaged leaves from the base of the plant using sharp, clean scissors or a knife to keep it tidy.

Sunlight Requirements

Sansevieria Cylindrica 'Boncel' is highly adaptable to a range of light conditions, making it an excellent houseplant.

  • Ideal Light: It thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. A spot near an east- or south-facing window with filtered light is perfect for promoting vibrant color and steady growth.

  • Tolerance: It can tolerate low light conditions, but its growth will be slower, and the leaves may not be as robust. Avoid placing it in very dark corners.

  • What to Avoid: Direct, harsh sunlight for extended periods can scorch the leaves and cause them to fade. If you live in a very sunny climate, a little afternoon shade is beneficial.

Water Requirements

Overwatering is the number one killer of snake plants. As a succulent, 'Boncel' is built to withstand dry conditions.

  • Watering Frequency: Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. This can be as infrequent as once every 2-3 weeks during the spring and summer. In the cooler, dormant months of fall and winter, reduce watering to once a month or even less.

  • How to Water: Water the plant thoroughly, ensuring water drains out of the pot's drainage holes. Do not let the pot sit in standing water. It's also best to water the soil directly and avoid getting the leaves wet, as this can lead to rot.

Propagation

Propagating Sansevieria 'Boncel' is straightforward and a great way to expand your plant collection.

  • Division: This is the easiest and most reliable method. When the plant becomes pot-bound or produces new "pups" (offsets), you can gently separate the rhizomes with a sharp, clean knife or your hands. Replant the new sections in their own pots with fresh, well-draining soil.

  • Leaf Cuttings: You can also propagate from a leaf cutting, though this method is slower. Take a healthy leaf and cut it into 2-4 inch sections. Let the cut ends callus (dry out and form a scab) for a day or two. Then, plant the cuttings upright in a pot with moist, well-draining soil. Keep the soil slightly moist until roots and new shoots develop. Note that cuttings from variegated plants may revert to a solid green color.

Great therapeutic pillow
Style: King - Low
I have been having pinch nerve issues where my fingers fall asleep with the pillow I had, so I started to search for pillows that would alleviate that and stay within a budget. Although this pillow cost more than I wanted to spend, the only other pillow that I was considering cost $100 more than this Purple pillow, so I purchased this pillow. The neck pains and pinch nerve issues are mostly gone. It is comfortable, maintains its shape and keeps you cool. I hope this pillow lasts a few years.

This Pillow Is The Greatest!
Style: Standard - Tall
This pillow is amazing! It’s very pricey, but worth EVERY penny in both my opinion and my husband’s. My husband had been complaining about his old pillow for a while. I did some research and this pillow seemed to be the best of the best according to the reviews. But that price - yikes! I kept checking back and saw it was on sale and decided to take a chance. Bought it in the tall size (7.5 in.) and decided it would be his early birthday gift. The first night of him using it was AMAZING for both of us. He has snored like a freight train and will periodically stop breathing for 15-18 seconds throughout the night for the past 26 years that I know of. Immediately, his super loud snoring downgraded to a very low level of snoring. He said after the first night he fell asleep fast, did not wake up nearly as much and finally had no neck pain in the morning. He’s had it over a month now and says he can’t believe a pillow could make this big of a difference in his sleep quality. I can’t believe I don’t have to deal with his concert level snoring anymore. Plus, he no longer stops breathing for short intervals anymore! This pillow has been well worth the cost for us!

Great pillow, my neck is grateful!
Style: Standard - Tall
I am a combination sleeper and this pillow is comfortable in almost any direction I lay. Definitely a relief on my neck compared to my previous cervical type pillows.

Decent pillow; medium-firm; heavy
Style: King - Medium
I was looking to replace my old latex pillow from BBB. I have tried several but finding just the right one has been elusive. Although expensive, I was confident this would be THE one. Sadly, it isn't. For a latex pillow, this IS really nice. It is comfortable and solid latex - hard to find. It is medium-firm and has decent spring back. But for me, it doesn't have enough sink. It is actually too firm and I felt my neck was cranked all night (I am 5'6", 135#, side sleeper, ordered the 6.5" one). I do think the cooling Purple grid works pretty well but at the same time, I could feel the grid under my pillow case. The pillow is very heavy.

It’s $30 to return and quickly STINKS from body heat
Style: Standard - Medium
Original review about $30 return below, but since it cost to return I gave it to my husband. He’s a hot sleeper so other than this pillow we’ve switched to all cotton, linen or wool bedding and it’s made a huge difference. (Polyester is plastic so it reflects your heat back to you and makes you sweat more and doesn’t breathe.) I truly would not have kept this pillow except $30 felt like a waste just to return and he got excited about it. So okay, it’s his. Well I’m the laundry queen in our household (he does all dishes) and I realized very quickly this pillow would need to be washed OFTEN. Like, once a week is NOT enough. Something about body heat and this material smells HORRIBLE. Washing it is obviously not easy, so I handwash the outer layer of the pillow with a very gentle soap (bought for silk). And then it has to hang dry. It doesn’t matter. I can clean it perfectly, no smell remaining whatsoever, but after two nights, it’s so strong I can smell it JUST STANDING NEAR THE BED. Look. I mentioned my hubs sleeps hot, sure. But he’s hygienic. This should not be such an issue. It’s never been an issue with any other pillows. The smell doesn’t even smell like him or like B.O. or anything. It’s awful and legitimately churns my stomach. But can I throw out the stupid $200 thing? Noooo. Now he’s attached. And I’m spending hours of my life each week washing it to keep from feeling sick sleeping near it at night. And to avoid having wasted $200. Hate this thing. DON’T BUY THIS STUPID PILLOW. Dropping from 2 stars to 1 Because of the smell. Original review: I thought I could buy this and see if the height would work for me. It didn’t, and pinched my neck instead. But now the *only* way to return it is to ship through UPS (not return to the UPS Store or Kohl’s or Whole Foods, which would be free). I was going to return it and try a different size, but such a high price just to *try* it is not worth it to me. I’ve returned much larger (defective) items in the past without hassle or cost (like an entire heavy duty garage shelf with broken pieces). Had I known, I would not have ordered in the first place, so I hope this saves someone else. As for the pillow itself, it was unique, but I couldn’t even really lay my head on it for more than a moment until I had let it air out for more than a week. It REEKED upon arrival. My husband said it smelled like ozone, and my brother compared it to the inside of an airplane. It burned my throat if I tried to lay on it for more than about 30 seconds at a time. Two and a half weeks later, the smell is still slightly there. So even if it was comfy for me, I would not keep this pillow.
