Partridge Pea is a small, easy-to-identify plant, usually less than 24 inches tall, often just a foot or less. Partridge Pea has distinctive sensitive plant-like leaves, with small but prominent yellow flowers.
Partridge Pea is one of the very few annual plants found on tallgrass prairies in Ohio. It grows and re-seeds well, particularly on looser soils and where Big Bluestem or other tall, dense vegetation has not taken over a site.
One of the best quick-growing pollinator plants, it's great for both native bees and honey bees. Partridge Pea is an excellent way to introduce kids to native wildflowers. Its larger seed makes it easy to hold and it typically germinates and flowers in the same growing season when planted in early spring.
How To Plant Partridge Pea Seeds:
Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze/thaw cycles and early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in partial shade to full sun. Typically produces blooms the first growing season. It is an annual species and will need to be replanted every growing season.
