Mammillaria elongata ‘Cristata’, commonly called the Brain Cactus, is a crested form of the widespread Mexican species Mammillaria elongata. While the normal species grows with cylindrical stems, this cultivar develops flattened, fan-shaped growths that curve and fold, creating the brain-like appearance for which it is known. The cristate form occurs naturally as a mutation and is maintained through propagation in cultivation.

The stems are densely covered in short, interlacing spines that range in colour from golden to pale yellow or copper. These spines overlap across the twisted ridges, adding both protection and texture. Over time, the plant forms irregular, sculptural clusters that continue to expand, often spilling across containers or over rock surfaces.

Flowers may appear in spring along the edges of the crest, though they are less common than in the typical form. When produced, they are small, cream to pale yellow, sometimes faintly pink-tinged, followed by slender reddish fruits containing black seeds. The cristate shape, however, rarely passes on through seed, making vegetative propagation the main method of maintaining this form.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright light with several hours of gentle direct sun; avoid prolonged harsh exposure that may scorch the crested tissue.
  • Water: Water moderately in the warmer months, letting the soil dry thoroughly before the next application. Keep almost dry during winter.
  • Media: Use a sharply draining, mineral-rich cactus mix with added pumice or grit.
  • Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser during spring and summer, about once every 4–6 weeks.
  • Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–30 °C. Can tolerate short periods down to 5 °C if dry.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years as the crest enlarges. Handle gently to avoid breaking fragile fan-shaped ridges.

My dogs think these are actual steak bites
Flavor Name: Beef, Size: 1.5 Pound (Pack of 1)
I’ve tried a lot of treats and my dogs usually get bored after a while, but they go crazy every single time I grab this bag. The pieces are soft and easy to break apart, which is perfect for training or smaller bites. I also like that they don’t smell horrible like some jerky treats do. My picky dog even listens better when I have these in my pocket, so that says a lot. Great size bag for the price and they stay fresh — definitely a repeat buy in our house.

Good if your dog’s not picky
Flavor Name: Beef, Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I ordered two treats. One was the beef because thought I’d give it a try. It looks good. Smells good, but not a hit with my dogs. It’s really soft and they like just a little bit harder too, but for little dogs are medium that are not too picky. I would definitely get this for them if they want something other than a chicken treat.
