Winter Gem Boxwood (Buxus microphylla var. japonica ‘Winter Gem’) is a classic evergreen shrub prized for its versatility and refined appearance. With its rich green foliage and dense growth, this gem boxwood brings year-round interest and structure to gardens of all styles. Whether used in foundation plantings, as a formal hedge, or shaped into topiary, Winter Gem offers a polished look that enhances any landscape. Its compact habit and reliable performance make it a wonderful addition to both traditional and contemporary gardens, much like other evergreen trees that provide year-round privacy and structure, providing evergreen beauty through every season.

Characteristics of Winter Gem Boxwood

Winter Gem Boxwood, or Buxus microphylla var. japonica ‘Winter Gem’, is celebrated for its compact, evergreen form and adaptability across USDA zones 5-9. The small, glossy leaves emerge a fresh light green in early spring, maturing to a deep, rich green that persists through winter. As temperatures cool, the foliage may take on a subtle golden bronze hue, adding seasonal interest. This slow grower typically adds less than 6 inches per year, making it perfect for small hedges, borders, and containers, and it pairs nicely with related Globe Japanese Boxwood for compact evergreen borders. Its dense growth and naturally rounded shape make it an excellent evergreen shrub for formal gardens, providing lasting color and structure with minimal maintenance.

Uses in Landscaping

Winter Gem Boxwood is a versatile choice for a wide range of landscaping applications. Its neat, compact shape makes it ideal for formal hedges, borders, and topiary, where it provides a crisp, evergreen outline with little need for frequent pruning, especially when combined with Winter Gem Boxwood Globe forms for formal accents. In containers, it adds structure and year-round interest to patios and entryways. As a foundation planting, Winter Gem creates a dense, evergreen screen that enhances curb appeal and offers privacy, complementing taller options like an English Laurel hedge for substantial evergreen screening. Its deer-resistant foliage and drought-tolerant nature make it especially valuable in gardens prone to deer browsing or dry spells, ensuring your landscape remains lush and attractive throughout the year, particularly when combined with other dense evergreen shrubs like Brush Cherry for hedging.

Planting and Establishment

For best results, plant Winter Gem Boxwood in well-drained soil and a location that receives full sun to part shade. When establishing young plants, water deeply and consistently during the first year to encourage strong root development, a practice that also benefits Fern Pine hedges used for evergreen privacy screens. Applying a layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature. In cold winter zones, protect plants from harsh winds and extreme cold, and in warmer climates you might pair Winter Gem with Carolina Cherry Laurel for hardy privacy hedges. A light trim in late spring or mid-summer will help maintain the desired shape and promote healthy new growth. During dry spells, check that the top inch of soil is dry before watering deeply again, ensuring the plant remains healthy and vibrant.

Pest and Disease Resistance

Winter Gem Boxwood is generally robust, but like other small-leaved boxwoods, it can be susceptible to boxwood leafminer. Regularly inspect your plants for signs of pests or disease, and address any issues promptly to maintain plant health, just as you would with Silver Sheen Pittosporum used in privacy screens. Pruning to improve air circulation and removing any affected stems can help prevent problems. Notably, Winter Gem is deer resistant, making it a reliable choice for landscapes where deer pressure is high. With attentive care and routine maintenance, this evergreen shrub will provide year-round structure and enduring beauty to your garden or landscape, and it combines well with other featured landscape plants such as Autumn Sage and companion shrubs for seasonal color and broader selections from our online nursery of trees, shrubs, and garden supplies.

200 Watts… More Like *2000 Watts!
Style: R-S202BL, Configuration: receiver only
This system is really nice and I mean it! Not a lot of information on this unit but what I can say is this system gets extremely loud to the point where you can lose your hearing from it. There is no distortion from this system even at max volume. I like music loud but this loud is on the next level and this is coming from a guy who has a lot of audio equipment and experience in the audio and FM broadcast industry! The nice thing is FM sounds wonderful on this unit. FM radio sensitivity is just wonderful like a high end receiver or like a good car FM radio. The wire provided to get radio reception wasn’t the best but a good tip is to put the wire next to the speaker wires to act like a ground plane but I highly recommend to get a good FM radio antenna that goes on your roof of your house for superior reception. AND no, the speaker wires don’t interfere with reception!!! I was skeptical due to the lack of information on this Yamaha, but I took that risk. I always knew Yamaha always been a very premium brand for audio and receivers but then you watch videos online about this unit they hate on it for being a cheap system when this isn’t true. This unit is for someone who wants a: Basic Semi Audiophile Stereo (Left and Right Sound) FM Radio, Line In or CD Playback, if you buy the cd reader separate. The video I provide is this stereo shaking my cheap old school 80s 8 inch bookshelf speakers. The only con is no sub out port. Irrelevant information starts here: The setup you see in the video is only temporary as we are remodeling the house and garage this stereo is currently in. Are new house is being currently being built in the country and after are new garage is built I’ll be putting this stereo in there and be setting this up with 2 outdoor Yamaha AW-350s on our back deck by the fire pit and the 2 old school 80s speakers in the garage. (Also a FM antenna mast for extreme FM radio reception.) The idea is the backyard would have good audio for music and are front yard would also get some good ported sound from the garage. Overall me and my family spends a lot of time outdoors no phones and little to no internet time just hanging out listening to music. The reason I am sharing this is because this is what I see a unit like this being used for.

Weak, Flat, Tinny Sound
Style: R-S202BL, Configuration: receiver only
My Insignia NS-STR514 suddenly died after a year of glorious sound (device still turned on, switch inputs, etc, just no sound), and I had to find another stereo receiver to replace it. Yamaha seemed to be a pretty popular brand, especially among musicians and home theater enthusiasts, so I figured I couldn't go wrong. Wrong. From the minute I hooked this receiver up I noticed a significant drop in power, range, and overall quality. This device is advertised as having the same 100w of power per channel, so this is really surprising for a major brand. I used to have to turn the Insignia up to 20, but this device has to be turned up to 44 to get the same loudness. When you do get this device cranked up enough to hear something, the sound is very flat. There's no other way to describe it. There's no range. Even if bass cranked to max you can barely hear it. The treble is weak, flat, and distorts at high volume. This device is literally making my stereo speakers that cost $300.00 each sound like a boom box from the 90's. I was considering upgrading my turntable to a higher quality one, but now, what's the point? On the flip side, the sound is clean, crisp. But man oh man is it flat. These days I mostly listen to music on high grade headphones and watch movies and streaming on my projector so it's not a huge loss (high fidelity sound on video games and movies isn't a huge deal to me), but don't buy this for your entry-level audiophile needs. There's got to be better options out there than this. The weak bass especially is unforgivable. *Update 04/25/17* My wife finally grew so tired of this piece of junk that I got rid of it and bought another Insignia Stereo Receiver. Unreliable as it is (dead after 2 years) it's still better than this garbage. The bass response is absolutely horrible, and the neighbors started complaining about the "booming". That's pretty much the only bass you get from this device. A loud, cheap-sounding thumping. The frequency response of this device is so poor, and the sound so thin and tinny, that even my wife couldn't stand it! Do yourself a favor and avoid this one.

Excellent Quality Wire Lugs and Adhesive Heat Shrink Set
Size: 2/0 Awg - 3/8" (M10) Ring, Number of Items: 10
I recently purchased the 10pcs 2/0 AWG-3/8" Wire Lugs Ring Terminal Connectors along with the 10pcs 3:1 Dual Wall Adhesive Heat Shrink set from Amazon and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with the quality and performance of this product! Firstly, the wire lugs are exceptionally well-made with heavy-duty materials. The copper construction ensures excellent conductivity, making them ideal for various electrical applications. The 2/0 American Wire Gauge size with a 3/8" ring terminal is perfect for my specific needs, and they fit securely on the cables, providing a reliable and sturdy connection. The wire lugs come with the corresponding 3:1 dual wall adhesive heat shrink tubes, which are an excellent addition to the set. These heat shrink tubes offer superior insulation and protection, making sure that the connection is secure and insulated against any potential damage or short-circuiting. The adhesive lining within the heat shrink tubes ensures a tight and waterproof seal, further enhancing the reliability of the connection. I found the installation process to be straightforward and hassle-free. The wire lugs are easy to crimp onto the cables, and the heat shrink tubes shrink perfectly around the connection using a heat gun. The adhesive within the heat shrink tubes bonds effectively, leaving no room for any moisture or contaminants to compromise the connection. Overall, I highly recommend the 10pcs 2/0 AWG-3/8" Wire Lugs Ring Terminal Connectors and 10pcs 3:1 Dual Wall Adhesive Heat Shrink set. The quality and performance of this product exceeded my expectations. Whether you're working on automotive projects, marine applications, or any electrical wiring projects, this set will undoubtedly fulfill your requirements. It's a fantastic value for the price, providing reliable and secure connections. I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase, and I will definitely be purchasing more in the future for my upcoming projects. Don't hesitate – give this product a try, and you won't be disappointed! Very nice battery lugs. They are not thin junk & they fit. I used a hydraulic crimper which gave me an excellent crimp. Well worth the money.
