Weighing in at about 448 grams per pair, they feature a wider platform than previous XTR models, providing better shoe support and control when things get rough. Four adjustable traction pins per side add extra grip when you’re not clipped in, and the reinforced outer cage helps protect the SPD mechanism from rock strikes. Shimano has also updated the bearing seals to improve durability and keep out grit for smoother, longer-lasting performance. One of the biggest upgrades is the new CL-MT001 SPD cleat design, which allows multi-directional entry — toe-first, heel-first, or straight down — while remaining fully compatible with existing SPD pedals and shoes. Combined with a solid build, improved protection, and a platform that bridges the gap between lightweight XC pedals and gravity-focused options like the Saint, the XTR M9220 delivers a high-performance solution for riders pushing hard on technical terrain.
